One of our foals went downhill very quickly on Saturday, so we took him and the mare to Purdue. They did preliminary bloodwork on the foal Saturday evening and the results actually came back quite good; the IgG levels showed that he had received plenty of colostrum, and the other "red flag" levels that the vet typically looks at to determine just how serious something is were all in the very good range, so he said he was going to give him fluids, make sure he continued to nurse, and start him on something for an infection.
We got a call Sunday morning to let us know that the colt had died very early in the morning. The vet is going to do a necropsy today to see what happened; if they missed something, etc. He really didn't forsee that outcome and he wants to know what the heck happened (as do we, obviously.) The mare is fine, and is producing a lot of milk, so if anyone in the immediate area (NW of Indianapolis) needs a nurse mare, let me know and we'll see if we can work something out.
