name change
How much trouble/$$ is it to change a horses name? Rules about duplicates? I've noticed that many names have been used many times in the past.
Here's the JC rule 6D on that:
D. A foal's name may be changed at any time prior to starting in its first race. Ordinarily, no name change will be permitted after a horse has started in its first race or has been used for breeding purposes. However, in the event a name must be changed after a horse has started in its first race, both the old and new names should be used until the horse has raced three times following the name change. The prescribed fee (see Fee Schedule) and the Certificate of Foal Registration must accompany any request to the Registry Office for a change of name.
The current fee for a name change is $100.

On names that have already been used:
E. Names of horses over ten years old may be eligible for use if they are not excluded under Rule 6(F) and have not been used during the preceding five years either for breeding or racing.
Names of horses that were never used for breeding or racing may be available for use five years from the date of their death as reported.
You can use the Interactive Registration at www.jockeyclub.com to check on the availability of names. Look for the Online Names Book.

That shorter time period is fairly recent. It was tough to name a horse a while back. It seemed every name was taken or copyrighted. I still try not to reuse the name of a horse who might still be alive, was really good recently, or who was in my area. Until I realized they were releasing the names of TBs who haven't raced or produced in five years, I was quite distraught thinking some of my retirees who were show horses were dead at 8 or 10!
I wouldn't rename a horse without good cause: offensive, etc., but lots do, especially if it was named at the yearling sale.

I'm hoping they don't rename Vallenzeri. It's a tribute to Azeri and Allen Paulson and it's grown on me. Remember though, Baffert is his trainer now so it's fair to fear what might happen with that name. He (I think only half-kidding) wanted Mr. Lewis to rename Silver Charm to Poker for a Buck (yes innuendo intended). Bob Lewis was like 'um, Bob, I dunno. I don't think Beverly would like that.'

I was hoping the same thing, but it's a done deal now....he's been named Take Control.
That's DISGUSTING!!!!!!

I can't understand that. That horse is famous as Vallenzeri. Why change the name? Maybe they really don't like the breeder? I always like one-word classic-sounding names.

The horse isn't famous as Vallenzeri. He's "infamous" as Vallenzeri. Infamous for having his price run up by his owner who was trying to defraud his family trust and some banks.
All in all I think it's nice for the horse to get a fresh start with a new name.
