Foal Conformation Opinions

Postby vallygirl927 » Wed Jun 17, 2009 9:22 am

Can anyone offer me opinions as to this foals conformation. I might pick up this baby to race later on down the road. Sire is Jet West. Dam is Fatihma and producer of $100,000 winner in three foals to race. 2nd dam is a producer of 3 blacktype winners and was CA broodmare of the year.
Jet West is over at the knee. I don't see any signs of this in this foal, but how probable is it that this could develop later on down the road? He's an early May baby. Pictures aren't the best, I know, but it's all I have right now.

Well it can be pretty hard to tell at this young age.. but his cannons on the front seem a bit long in relation to his forearms - or his forearms are short compared to his cannons :) It's not possible, in these photos, to judge his shoulder or his neck. Back end looks pretty good, though.

The side view pic....the pasterns are long and sloping. I'll wager they were very weak when the foal was born. That would stop me cold.

You're right, the photos aren't the best, but judging by what I can see he looks a solid and decently well-made colt for his age and stage.

over at the knee is way better than back of the knee from my standpoint and experiance the latter or the former are not desirable but there not the end all.

Vally,
How much is the horse. The horse to me looks good, but they can change to quickly. Confirmation now isnt something to REALLY REALLY microscope now. If the horse was SEVERALY deformed then I think alot of us would say no!
But as far as confirmation, what are you planning on doing with this horse? Jumper, runner, barrel race alot of that has the answere to your question.

I concur that over at the knee is way better than the alternative. This guy seems to be put together pretty well all in all.

The conformation possessed by a foal is almost completely irrelevant to whether or not they will make a decent racehorse. As others have said they will change so much in the next 2 years. If you can watch the foal run and play that will give you a much better idea about his future athletic ability.
