it's the humidity

Postby Lisann » Mon Jun 22, 2009 11:38 am

They say it ain't the heat, it's the humidity, but lately, it's both. Our highs here have been over 90 degrees since Weds. It's forecast to stay that way until next Tuesday!

Horses are in under fans from 6AM until 9:30 or 10PM. On top of the heat, the horseflies are bad too - they broke the fence last week when they were being attacked.

Ugh!

Hot ribbon wire along the top of your fence is your horses' best friend..

welcome to my world of 40s', pouring, and 45 mph winds.. I say this is New England, it could snow, blizzard Nor'Ester, flashflood, or the gates of hell may open and swallow us whole on a moments notice.

Actually, the fence is all electric - 3 stands of 2" tape. They really just lose their minds when those horseflies start biting.

While we've been having Florida weather - nearly 100 degrees, heavy rain squalls with cool sharp breeze followed by sun and sauna-like. The climate zones definitely seem to be shifting.

Here at Colonial Downs in Virginia it's odd because it's marvellous to train until about 7 30 am and there's even a glorious breeze that comes from somewhere but as soon as the sun is in direct opposition to where you want to be then look out!. The shedrows have fans on 24 / 7 and there are lovely mesh screens around the shedrows to cut out the sun's bite but then you have to emerge from that salvation and lead the poor creatures over to the paddock. I ran one last saturday afternoon when the heat index was 105 and I shall NEVER subject the little guy to that nonsense again. Luckily on Friday, monday and tuesday they have twilight racing which gives us all some relief even though it's a late finish. Oh well at least the meet ends in July and I can maybe go north to the Great Lakes area. Fun Fun Fun.!

I'm in Missouri, too, and it has been oppressive to say the least. I've been bringing my dogs in and putting them back out in the evening and giving the horses a "cold shower" everyday, sometimes twice.
I read on a showdogs list today that some dogs perished in St. louis in a van last night. Handler claimed she left van doors open and fan running but all six dogs died.
Lisann, I'm in SW MO, where are you?

It has rained for 23 of 25 days in June here in NY. Today is the first day they THINK it won't rain, but we give up one evil for the heat. It is going to be warm, not 100 degrees warm, but freakin hell I just packed my heavy jacket away last month!

I think arknasas might be the hottest place in the country right now when you factor in the humitity. it was 105 yesterday and that's not a "beach" 105... that's a "dileverance, banjo playing swamp" 105.

ever walk outside and feel like someone just socked you in the jaw? that's what it felt like yesterday.

I live around 15 mintues from the gym, so cose i usually walked. I walked there and it was so hot (at 7pm mind you), I called a cab back home.

I walked outside to go to my car at 6 this morning and it was too hot.

when I lived in flordia it would be 110 but not be anywhere near this hot. it's a different kinda heat. it's a "cool" heat. there is nothing cool about this.

My friend told me about those dogs - so sad!

We live about 75 miles N of St Louis.

It was only 85 when I got home at 6 last night, so the horses went out for a couple hours. In 2 hours later when the horse flies came out, then back out at 10. At least I got a chance to clean stalls while they were out.

Hey BDW, of all your posts this is the first to make me roll over laughing! I was picturing the whole scenario in wonderful Little Rock then you caught a cab you wuss! Actually I cannot blame you as it must be like a sauna but FYI heat is heat........period ! I have met the enemy and it is the sun. We need him only in short bursts but he sticks around like the mother-in-law. My face looks like an aids-quilt after several surgeries for skin cancer. I never saw much business for skin cancer surgeons in Norway. Now I have to know BDW, did you ever play the banjo? Squeal piggy squeal!

I've been told when I'm in the mood to be i'm quite a riot (i.e drunk)

my dad's dad actualy has..well had a banjo and I play the violin and it's not that different, I used to do alot of pucking on the violin, certain songs require it, so I could actually somewhat play the banjo. I wasn't good or anything.

It's hot. very very very hot.

Every year i want oaklawn to have a summer meet. no way in hell.

In fact, I don't even see how they have racing in the daytime in the summer.

It wasn't so much the heat... I could deal with the heat by itself. I can deal with walking back to my place after a hard workout by itself. both not both at the same time. yesterday was leg day nd I was particually pumped up for some odd reason and kinda over did it and was wobby kneed afterwards.. the thought of wobbling 3 miles back home in 100 degree heat was not appealing to me.

oh and the cabbie caught a flat 2 blocks and It took 15 mintues for therepalcement cab to get there, so I would have saved time walking
