Going to first race as an owner

Postby karenkarenn » Thu Aug 06, 2009 1:35 pm

Hello
I was looking for some advise because the horse that I have a share in is going to run her first race at Golden Gate.
1. Am I supposed to order tickets to get in? Or as an owner, do I automatically get in free?
2. What about my family? Should I purchase admission for them?

As an owner, your owner's license will get you in. I assume there is Will Call at GGF. Your trainer can get the rest of your party looked after as well. You could ask your trainer about this or your partners if they have more experience on the whole fun experience

Karen:

The managing partner should have told you about this, so I would ask him, and he will know exactly what you have to do.

Do you have a big enough share to have an owner's license? I'm thinking you must not, because you would have had to get it by now, or your horse would be scratched. If you have an owner's license, you will get into every racetrack for free and park for free, and you can call into the owners liaison for passes for your party.

If you are part of a partnership so that your name is not in the program, you will not have to have a license, but then you will not be able to get to the barn area by yourself, so you will need to meet the managing partner somewhere on the grounds. Parking at GGF is not free for the public, and you certainly shouldn't have to pay, so he should get you into the barn area where you can park for free, and then your entire party can walk into the grandstand from there without tickets. If you park in the barn area, you must park along the fence right after you pull in the gate. Don't drive around the barn area and park around the kitchen, even though you will see plenty of people do that. They are vendors and trainers; owners should not park up there.

If he is not willing to meet you in the barn area, then he should be able to leave passes for you at the Will Call in the entrance to the ClubHouse. Getting off on Gibson St. exit from I-80, turn right toward the water, and then right again. Go up the hill to the valet parking, and the Club House glass doors have a Will Call right there. You can continue down the hill and around to cheaper self-parking, but I don't know if there is a Will Call at that entrance, and it is a LOT of walking.

There used to be owner's seating, but now that there are so few people at the track, there is no official owners seating. There is an owners lounge downstairs with free sodas and coffee, but you must have a license to partake there.

Good luck! What is the name of the horse?

Tuc and Majxmom,
OKay No noone told me about the WILL Call. I parked last time ( when I went to see Fade to Gold workout) at the owners and trainers parking lot. Which is VERY small esp for a four door truck. It was full so we had to park on the street behind GG.
Is that the parking lot that your talking about?
When I took my hubby and son in, at first they didnt let them in, then they gave them a sticker to wear. And I believe that there is an entrance from the back side to the grandstands.... Is that were I should be going?
My partner right now is managing and running Creston/Windfall Farms so he hasnt been returning my last call about this question hes simply busy. Which I understand.

Best of luck to you and your horse -- don't hesitate to ask questions of the track personnel if you are in doubt. Hope you have to find the winner's circle.

In theory, you license should get you into parking without having to pay. It's been a while for the N Cal connection for me, so I may be incorrect. Here we get O/T (owner/trainer) stickers for our vehicles which allows us to go and or park where we desire.
Show your license to the guy taking money and he ought to pass you thru.

The license should get you into the parking lot; clubhouse and backstretch.

You should be OK with a maiden race Karen but before you invite everyone and make travel arrangements make sure the race is going. Races in the book don't always fill up North and I've had to wait more than a week before a race actually got carded.

Karen, here is a link to the Northern Ca. TOC liason. I'm sure they can help with anything.

Karen:

If you have an owner's license, you are home free.

The very small parking lot you are talking about is the OT lot closest to the kitchen, but it fills up in the morning, and you might be lucky to find a spot there. BUT, if that lot is full -- and the attendant will probably tell you if it is -- then there is an auxiliary OT lot along the waterside. Don't go up the hill, just go into the lot below the cliff right on the water. There's always plenty of spaces there.

If you call the TOC number and get the passes to the Will Call (you won't have any problems if your name is in the program), then look for some steep stairs from that lot that will lead up to the Club House. If you don't want to bother with the passes or someone has truble with steep stairs, walk your party back through the small parking lot and go in the stable gate. I suppose you would probably want to go to the barn and see your horse. To go to the grandstand, simply walk around the guard gate that is at the stable gate you just walked through, and there is a walkway along the rail all the way to the saddling paddock. They may or may not stop you as you walk onto that path. Lately I haven't seen anyone stopped, but they are most likely to stop someone they've never seen before or don't recognize, and I hate to say it, but as a woman owner, I used to get stopped all the time when unlicensed men could walk right by.

But all the advice above is right: Your trainer should smooth the way for you on all of this. He should make sure that you have passes and go pick them up, or at least make sure they are at Will Call for you.

Karen, make sure you get some sturdy ground/tether straps (like the kind they attach to the Goodyear Blimp) and attach them to yourself so people can make sure you don't fly away because, believe me, you will be walking on air. There is no feeling like your first race as an owner.
Enjoy the experience.

Best of luck and a safe journey for all!
