Where to advertise?

Postby Laurierace » Fri Sep 18, 2009 12:20 pm

When Pimlico closed last year I was forced to give up my training business and my owners. I have recently rented stalls at the old Bonita farm near my house and am interested in getting a few outside horses to train. The track is in great shape, the pastures are huge and full of grass. The stalls are nice as well. The best part is NO RACING SECRETARY!!! meaning we can actually chose which race and track suits the horse as opposed to be held hostage.
Its been many years since I advertised for clients. I mainly used TB Times but a quick perusal of their ads didn't show anything close to what I am offering so I don't know how many people would think to look there. I haven't gotten that magazine myself in many years as the content was dated by the time it arrived. Mid Atlantic TB makes the most sense but the soonest I could get in would be their November issue. Any thoughts on the DRF? I don't really want a national ad, not sure if they tailor their editions to the different regions or not. I am open to suggestions other than what I have mentioned here. Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.
I have a Training Center page that I added to my website to give a glimpse into this forgotten paradise.

Well, I can't help with your question but I must say I spent a couple of hours earlier this evening looking at your website and enjoyed it very much.
Great pictures and good information, links, etc. Wish you weren't so far away. Best of luck.

Argh! I threw away some regional racing papers that may be good to advertise in. On a break from packing, I may swing up to the tack shop in Crofton to see if they have the latest editions.

There is The Equiery which runs articles about Maryland racing and I've seen ads for racehorses for sale. The rag is primarily made up of ads and leans more to the other equestrian disciplines, but you can always give it a try.

Have you tried the free advertising in The BloodHorse Source ? You can do it on line, you get free advertising on line and in their print version. I've done it for years.

This year they messed up my e-mail address and put in an old one, don't know why but the rest of the info is still there.

Tbird thanks for the kind words. I wish you were closer too! Everyone else, thanks for the suggestions I will look into them all. Please keep the ideas coming. I found out the owner is a developer. He has sold off all the plots he has planned to sell and wants to keep the training center intact for the meantime. If we can't get this place up and running he may change his mind. That would be a tragedy on many levels.

Oh Laurie I hope the owner doesn't sell off everything!

I did swing by the tack shop and they didn't have the papers this go around. I asked one of the girls and she couldn't think of the exact titles, but she recalled one was from Pennsylvania and the other covered the Delaware River Valley.
