Smoky Stover on Canter for $600

You would think that this horse made enough to have had something set aside for his retirement. Instead he's begging for a home.

Tiz, I don't think it's exactly like that. When Harry died, the horse belonged to his estate. There is a committee of people that have been disposing of the horse assets for the executor/trustee. Greg Gilcrest is on that committee, and he is one of the good guys. I believe that Smokey's price was set to be high enough to be above kill price, but low enough to find him a nice home with kids, as he is a kind horse but with some arthritis. Someone posted Greg's number on the Internet, and he's been bombarded with calls, and now I expect that the horse may not go to an individual loving home like he might have, but will go to a rescue facility that will make a lot of hay out of it. Apparently Old Friends has said they will take him. He's NOT in any danger at all. Canter CA is handling the listing.

He's the top and bottom bay, not the middle chestnut.

That middle chestnut is English Channel, taken at Monmouth Park, I believe.

Gorgeous photo of Smokey! I'd always wondered what had happened to him after the debacle at Monmouth; he clearly hadn't taken to the track at all that day. The important thing is that he'll get a good home, one way or the other.

The Aleo trust is about done. Greg does what he can for these horses. He will keep two I believe and the others sold or have been sold. It would be nice to see him go on to a new career IMO
