This is from the Equine Disease Quarterly, July 2009 edition and it reported on the American Horse Council's 2005 economic impact report. The rsults show: 844,531 human racing injuries; 2,718,954 showing; 3,906,923 recreational, and 1,752,439 other*.
The total is 9,222,847 human injuries related to equine activities.
The article I read was not clear on the time frame that this report includes. I can't imagine it covers less than 10 years. With approximately 9.2 million horses in the US this comes to one injury per horse. That can't be good news.

Gee, one of my horses stepped on my toe the other day. Where can I go to report it?
Not rolling my eyes at you, Shammy, but this report reminds me of the "hunger in America" report where they asked people if they had been hungry any one day in the last year, and if so, that person was counted as being a person who did not get enough food in America. Who doesn't get hurt when you are on the end of a lead shank, occasionally? I've broken a few bones in 50 years, but I get body-sore almost every day I handle a weanling. I wish these jokers that compile this data would get laid off.

Something or somebody has gotten scrambled here... here is the text of the report from the AHC link -
"The study concludes that there are 9.2 million horses in the U.S., including horses used for racing, showing, competition, sport, breeding, recreation and work. This includes horses used both commercially and for pleasure.
Specifically, the number of horses by activity is:
Racing - 844,531
Showing - 2,718,954
Recreation - 3,906,923
Other - 1,752,439
Total - 9,222,847"

The statistics Shammy misused are the number of HORSES in those activities and nothing whatsoever to do with human injuries.
This is an example of distortion. An example of parrotism will be when eight out of ten people repeat to others what was in the original post, not the actual facts from the document, as posted by monicabee.
Perhaps Shammy has a great sense of humor and is waiting for his distorted facts to spread around and eventually get repeated back to him with some even more fantastic fabrications attached. Thus he will know what fools are around him. Sort of like the farmer who tries to sell you third cut timothy, just to see if you are paying attention. There is no such thing as third cut timothy.

I was onto him immediately as their is far more reported injuries in racing than in the showring. If you get hurt in the ring, boo hoo. If you get hurt at the track you are on Worker's comp or handheld by the Jockey's Guild. In decades of showing I have seen a handful of minor injuries. I have seen more in one race some days.

Madelyn, if you want to be a jerk and say I purposely misused the data, have at it.
I took the information from UK Equine Disease Quarterly that I received in the mail. It is apparent to me now that the article was somewhat confusing. Certainly, the numbers didn't add up. I should have gone to the source that I posted to clarify what I read in the EDQ. I regret that I didn't, I made the stupid assumption that the article had been lifted from the source. I'm sorry I ever posted the subject. There was no intent on my part to mislead or to get a laugh on anyone.
It appears the laugh is on me. I certainly look stupid, but at least I'm not acting like a jerk. My apologies to all for being stupid.

Your apology is accepted. Please accept my apology for using the term "jerk." I know better than that.
There is no need to delete anything. Actually, I've learned a couple of good lessons. First, I'll be sure to check all the sources from now on. I re-read the article and I still don't see why the American Horse Council statics were used when the UK/Gluck writer placed percentage values on levels and types of injuries. Secondly, don't fly off the handle until you know all the facts.
My apologies, Shammy, I did not intend to ridicule. I can delete my post if you wish.
