Army of Women

Postby Kelly Kip » Wed Oct 14, 2009 5:46 am

Hi everyone,

Many of you know that I am a breast cancer survivor if 14 years.

I joined The Army of Women about six months ago and I wanted to share this
with everyone I know. It is basically an army of women that is focused on
breast cancer research. They conduct studies and surveys. It's really not
only women, men can join also. Anyone can join. If you've had breast
cancer, if you're at risk for breast cancer, or if you don't have even a
chance of getting breast cancer, everyone is able to join.

There is no cost or obligation. Once you become a member you may receive
studies to participate in. They will provide you a list of qualifications
and if you meet the qualifications you can participate. Some of the surveys
I've received have had qualifications like, "are you a woman between 25 and
35 who has an older sister who was diagnosed with breast cancer?" or "were
you diagnosed with breast cancer and have been a mastectomy, and you're over
50?" You do NOT have to participate in any study that you don't want to.
Some are simply surveys. Some may require you to provide a blood sample.
It's all kinds of things. I get a study request about every 3 or 4 months.

Anyhow, I thought I'd pass this on. If you decide to join please use me as
your referrer [email protected].

Thanks!!

I do have a question for you.. that is completely off topic but I don't live in the south anymore and I don't know what to tell my friend who called me the other day to tell me her tumors are growing and she can't do a thing abotu it. Can a woman without insurance get treatment for breast cancer anywhere?

Very interesting link, Kelly Kip (I run a cancer clinical research department at a university hospital in Toronto).... congrats on being a survivor!!!! My mom is also a nine year BrCa survivor!

Tappiano.... I would have to say that the best bet for your friend is to enrol into a treatment clinical trial. She can go to www.clinicaltrials.gov and look up trials and places where they're running those trials.

I just did a quick search for "no-cost breast cancer treatment" and came up with quite a lot of sites; don't have time to read through them but they look to be regional in nature, for instance one in Texas called "Wings' that looks good. So maybe your friend can locate an org in her area by researching "no-cost" or "uninsured treatment", etc.
And perhaps the Susan J. Koman org has info for treatment of ininsured.
I'm a survivor (just one year out but doing great) and I was/am fortunate to have excellent (self-bought, self employed) coverage but I believe that the medical institution at which I received care does treat the uninsured, I THINK, not sure. It is part of the world-wide Sisters of Mercy health care systems.

Thank you for the information. I gave her the contact information for the koman foundation in Savannah. She does not have an internet connection anymore. She also asked me if we would look after her 12 year old son if anything happened to her because her ex husband won't have anything to do with him.
