Out rider's at Woodbine - today Sunday Nov 22nd

Postby westover » Sun Nov 22, 2009 3:07 pm

I just watched the 8th race at Woodbine. Shortly after the horses left the starting gate, the horse Jim McAleney was on (Tycoon Doby) bolted off, & it became obvious something was seriously wrong. I watched as the outrider gave a stellar ride & rescue to Jim McAleney, taking hold of his mount and pulling him up. Its not often the outrider's get mention or acknowledgement for the work they do. I don't know who the outrider was, but what a fantastic job he did.

I watched this race and the post race coverage didn't explain what happened. Jimmy won the stake after, and didn't mention the mishap. Anyone know shat went wrong?

I sent a friend at the track a text asking him so i will let you know when i find out. I have watched the replay a few times as i just could't believe what a great job the outrider did in keeping what could have been a disaster of a situation under control.

Larry the outrider is amazing!! He has saved my butt on several occasions. Woodbine has some of the best outriders around. :D

We used to have an outstanding outrider in NorCal named Leroy. He had a lightning-quick flea-bitten gray horse. Leroy always concentrated, and when a jock tumbled off at the start, that horse would catch up in a second and he could bulldog down the loose horse. I really miss him. No offense to the current outriders, but they can't hold a candle to Leroy.

I'm an outrider at Thistledown and it looks like the rein broke. Awesome catch and that pony can really belly down!

Neat. I never thought of that after watching it on my wee little screen. I saw a horse mid field on a bull ring have his bit break at the snaffle joint. How the rider stayed on was miraculous. :)

i really think they should do something for the outrider's and their horses at the end of the year, they are such an integral part of the whole game and so over looked. :)

They are revered and adored by the jockeys and exercise riders. It would be nice though to give them something special though. :)

IMPRESSIVE catch!! That pony was MOVING, going faster than the racehorses while carrying probably 75 -100 lbs more (western tack and rider), of course they can do that for a short burst.

I would love to see that outrider and pony recognized for that effort. Maybe other outriders would be inspired to do as well, if not better?

Again - IMPRESSIVE!!

I would just like to share that my 7 yr old paint gelding was just bought by an outrider at Churchhill Downs. So after a distinguished show career (ROM and 2 Top 5's at the Worlds in 2005) he is moving on to something new and exciting! I keep thinking how cool it would be to see him lead a derby horse to the gate!
