"The New York Daily News reported that a top racing official in New York said the Belmont Stakes might not go on this year because of budget problems.
The Belmont Stakes is scheduled for June 5.
But that might not happen if the Nw York Racing Association does not get an infusion of cash.
The decision depends on a decision on video lottery terminals at Aqueduct.
The holdup seems to be traced to a problem with lawmakers and the governor who can't decide who should operate the casino.
Until an operator is chosen, the question mark hangs over the Belmont Stakes. "

Re: Bye Bye Belmont Stakes?
hi Tappiano...hi all
I see little reason not to go ALL IN with the chips that the 2010 edition of the Belmont Stakes will run as scheduled.
Yes there's a budget thing, but (horseracing aside) the Governor (Patterson), Assembly Speaker (Silver), Senate Democratic Leader (Sampson), among others, could risk facing a firing squad
if perceived as continuing to delay (as a result of selfish/self-serving motivations/connections) the process and apparatus intended to deliver $125mil annually to aid education in the state of New York ($53mil to NYC alone), and to create jobs (possibly thousands). That's some of what's at the core of the Aqueduct Casino/slots...aside from funding NYRA.
What I sense we've seen is a number of New York electeds trying to play a form of poker (if you will). It'll come to an end though; and (as is often the case in politics) each will attempt to paint him/herself as a team player, without whom the great result(s) would not have been possible.
However it all unfolds...I'm as certain as certain can be that the 2010 Belmont Stakes will run as scheduled.
