They develop real estate.
So what do we think will happen to Santa Anita, Golden Gate, Turfway Park, Pimlico now that MI DEVELOPMENT Company owns them?
Their only business is to develop real estate for Frank Stronach's other companies.
Not a good sign. Oak Tree out at Santa Anita just a first step?
What does a Real Estate Development Co. Do?

they will have racing in southern california. i assure you of this.
too much money.. check out the handle on a sunday afternoon at santa anita. no other place in the country comes close. maybe keeneland.. probably keeneland actually.
i could see them getting done with hollywood park. I think more than anything else, that.. they are basically giving up money by not runnign their own meet in the fall, heck the racing in the fall is better than the racing in the winter!

They did not renew Oak Tree's lease. Said California racing model is broken and everything is on the table. Said they will have a plan in place by June 2010.
No doubt California's racing model is broken. Whatever the plan is, it better include much higher purses. See link to Oak Tree article:

Lately I have heard several prominent people say racing in Northern California is finished except for the fair meets. That can only mean the GGF is close to development. They are having trouble filling races. What a shame. If that happens, I'll probably stop running in CA and just use Country Life to run my horses back East. The Cal-bred program won't be enough to overcome all the pluses of racing back East.
The bizarre thing is that to me, there's never been a better time to be an owner of a claimer in Northern California. The purses might have dropped but it's a lot easier to run fourth or better in a six horse field than a 10 horse field. And personally, I love the Tapeta.

Two things; I don't think GGF is close to development. Commercial and Residential real estate in Nor Cal is depressed and just in the early stages of recovery. Actually Commercial is right in the middle of their depression. I am close to a few upper management folks @ GGF and there is no indication GGF is near closing. GGF makes money.
Secondly, I was looking at some old Win pictures the other day and seven years ago I was running for a $1000 dollars more in purse money for the same condition as today. Seven years ago.....
I have a 2 year old that's been in and out of training at the farm since last fall. I am seriously considering sending him to Arizona this fall and winter then going to Prairie Meadows with him next spring. The only thing that would preclude me from racing him in California would be his class range. If he is good enough to run for first condition allowance I would return to Ca. Maiden 5's from Arizona are equal to M12,5's @ Prairie and run for a $12500 pot..

they should have done this for a decade now, but they should shut down nocal racing and run it all as one circuit. lol, you have two circuts that have no qualms about running 4 horse fields. why not get 1 circuit that can get you a constant 8-9 horse field.
just makes more sense from a betting standpoint.
California horse wise is not big enough right now to support, fully support 2 circuits.
write some 5k claimers at santa anita. everyone else does it. write races for the horses you have on the grounds.

Zinn,
I have notice the same thing. Much less purse money, but my training costs are almost double what they were 8 years ago.
Then we wonder why there are 4 horse fields.
I truly believe, and have heard others connected to racing management say that we are headed toward one large centrally based racetrack in California. To be near a population center is no longer relevant to racing. The handle comes from online and OFB now.
It may take a few years, but could happen.

Why not bring the Indians and their slots into a deal??
That would be great but I think the Indians would rather watch racing die a slow death. The Indians have a monopoly on gaming in California. A deck of cards, a dealer, some machines and other service related folks is a whole lot cheaper than horses, vets, feed companies etc. It's an unfair advantage and until the politicians and the people of California allow the monopoly to continue racing will suffer.
I'm running for 10% less in purse money and my day rate is 50% higher than 7 years ago. That cannot continue...
losAl
You know, it is almost unbelievable, but Doc Allred and Mike Pegram offered that deal 6 or 7 years ago (Los Al), and they were ignored like two 7th graders at the senior prom.
Interestingly, it was the power brokers in Oak Tree that laughed at the idea.
