rough week

Postby Lisann » Mon Aug 02, 2010 1:30 pm

My 2009 Indy Mood colt, Axel, had a rough week last week. He had to go to the vet on Tues - poked his left eye. Medicating now and in during the day.

Friday, I noticed he was stinky. Discovered hit 2 front teeth were loose & nasty bits of food packed around them. Back to the vet on Sat for a 2nd check on the eye. She cut both teeth out.

Oh, and his buddy Zeus (my Arab gelding) is getting tired of playing babysitter for yearlings who get hauled to the vet - 3x in 2 weeks. My 2009 Indy Mood filly, Iffy, got uveitis a couple weeks ago.

Good grief! I hope your week gets better, sorry to hear about your troubles. When you say "cut out" the two front teeth, you don't mean completely do you? My understanding is that they continue to grow, and frankly, I have not ever seen a horse with dentures  ! So what did they do exactly, cut them off at the gum line? Just wondering....

Sorry to hear about your week Lisann. What a rough time. Your vet is no doubt happy with your ponies' activities causing them to come to his clinic to help subsidize his kids' college fund.

Our kids' pony poked his eye on a stick in the pasture a couple weeks ago too - it hasnt been fun or pretty to say the least.

If its any consolation, they say bad luck comes in threes, so hopefully you are done with it for awhile. All the best!

Look on the bright side... think of all the trailer loading training they're getting.

Pulled the baby teeth would be a more accurate description. OP, hope your week gets better and your horse are ok.

Yes, the vet did actually cut out the 2 baby teeth - he should get his adult ones in about a year. She tranquilized him, gave a local (like novacaine), and used a scapel to cut the tooth out. He had ripped the gums, so it really didn't take much cutting to remove the teeth.

Axel was a pro - 10 min to load/unload 4 times when he first when to the vet.

Jessi - yes, I am hoping this counts as my 3 and things settle down for a while!

Yikes Lisann :o I hope Axel has thought long and hard about whether he wants to go back to the vets anytime soon! I like the saying "when it rains it pours" - so very true. Here's to you seeing some well deserved sunshine!

What a couple of hectic and expensive weeks you had! Here's hoping it's all over now and the rest of the year is peaceful.
