stall mirrors

Postby mightyhijames » Sun Aug 15, 2010 12:03 pm

we have a 3year old in training at the track who is a stall walker. i've read of success w/stall mirrors for walkers and weavers so i'm wondering if anyone out there has had any experience w/the same?

Hi James,
If he is in a stable with other horses near him that he can see, mirrors usually won't help the situation. Getting your horse a goat, would really help, especially if he's stall walking due to being stressed. Other things done with stall walkers is putting a few bales of straw (one on top of the other) around the stall in 4-5 spots.....some get very good at avoiding these bales and start stall zig walking very well:>)....those you must get serious with. There was a trainer from years back who had Creme De la Fete. He won a lot of races....he was a stall RUNNER....clocking over 30 miles+ per night. He was put in a stall closed off with bales of straw on either side....he was backed into his stall, given hay, water, grain and a fan in front of the stall if needed. Creme De la Fete would run and win just about every week with the energy he saved. That's a last resort, but it's better than the alternative. TJ

I groomed a crazy stallwalker, He's dig a trench every night almost a foot deep. We moved him to a different stall, one against an outside wall away from a high traffic area, hung a haynet on the side the most traffic came from, and put an open stall gate on the front, and he calmed down finally, unless something got him stressed.
One thing to check, are your horses neighbours. If they are rowdy and loud, kicking walls or screaming their heads off, it can make things a lot worse.
I have cross tied horses to the front of their stalls during the day, and I've used the small soft tires and rubber feed tubs on the floor, but found they move too much to do any good for a serious walker.
A woman needs 2 animals in her life-the horse of her dreams, and a jackass to pay for it!

thanks for the input. i've heard about a stable pet but actually the mirror approach makes sense to me, too.

Hi James,
We just had a goat move in on the other side of us....it's amazing how the horses in the barn are with him...they all like him being there. This guy is a young one and not into buttin' too much:>) They will eat the straw if it's there loose....but like a horse will eat hay first if it's available. It's best to tie him up outside the stall, rather than stalled with the horse. This guy in our barn has a bale of straw that he hangs out on, his water, hay and feed is on top of it and he walks in and out of the crazy horses stall (doesn't mess with the straw as long as he has his stash on top of it:>)........since the goats been here that horse has settled quite a bit. I have sold Valerian powder to many trainers that have turned their SW into gentle lambs. 1 scoop twice a day. An herb shop will have the VP.

It will also give you a positive test if you race the horse on it, necessary withdrawal time should be at least 7days, check with your Vet. TJ

anything i sell to the trainers, i check with the vet 1st, he gave me a green light. One SW had a form reversal after the Valerin, & paid 80.00 to win. It works on tb that wash out.

Maybe so Louis, but there are regulations on VR at most all race tracks and dressage and jumping events....that's why so many people stopped using it on track. We used to keep the actual root in the water bucket, remember....you used to be in NY back then:>) TJ

We knew each other like so many people did on the backside by sight or word of mouth....like, go see Louie he's got a good deal on so and so:>) Bought some of your wares off you back in the day.....worked for a few of the big guys on the backside and for NYRA on the frontside in the PM.....getting back to Valerian Root.....Finish Line Products had to stop selling Calm-Em because horses were getting positives from Valerian Root and Kava Kava Root. That product went through some changes and now is called Thia-Cal, noting no Valerian Root or Kava Kava used. TJ
