August Belmont's pocket watch on eBay

Postby Firebrand » Fri Aug 20, 2010 7:47 pm

I thought this was interesting, and thought that some other history buffs might think so too...

I was out "window shopping" on eBay and ran across this listing for August Belmont's pocket watch. Since I'm always interested in things related to thoroughbred history, the fact that it belonged to one of the greatest breeders of the 20th century caught my attention.

It's pretty neat if it's the real thing. Some pretty big bucks too.

I was like wow i'm going to bid on this..

until i looked at the price tag. while i could technically pull it off.. i can't justify buying that at that price.

there was a breeders cup trophy on ebay not too long ago for peanuts, like 400 bucks. i think the 98 sprint. it was defiantly a sprint race

what really sucks is ovbiously hat family is not doing all that great right now. I hate that for anyone let alone one of the patriarchs of American horse racing.

If my great great great grandfather was august belmont and I had that passed down to me, I would damn near have to be dead to sale that. that is priceless.

That should be going to a museum....along with whatever else was in that trunk. Anyone have any pull with the Kentucky Horse Park, maybe?

I would have loved to see what else was in that trunk! I was hoping that the person selling the watch would list some of the other items too.

I would be interested in his stop watch. It's probably not gold and $4000.

The saddest was when they had the sale of Woody Stephens stuff on Belmont Stakes day and 98% of it went to people who were going to resell it. By the time we went through the line (we were 10th) there was literally nothing worthwhile left. The first two people in line carted their purchases off in shopping carts.

Hi bdw

I replied to all of the PM's, but none of the replies went through. Some sort of glitch in the system. I'm very sorry for the mixups. I tried emailing all of people who sent me a PM, where an email address was available, but only got a couple of responses. Here is a current list of books remaining. Most of the books on the original list have been sold. Thanks to all who purchased.
