Excellent article. This writer gives an appreciative but not overly indulgent insight into the entire cast of folks 'on the backside' that it takes to 'make' a truly great horse....
Yes I know "great" horses are born not made but it is critical for such a horse to encounter and be surrounded by those that know or have learned how to get 'access' to that tremendous potential that the horse inherently 'knows' it posesses. Those people are the ones willing to work with the horse in guiding the use of that talent rather than only interested in 'controlling' the horse for their own purposes/agenda.
Racing could use more reporting/writing of this nature - coverage of our sport that goes beyond the saddling paddock and winner's circle on race day afternoons to inform the public about ALL the personalities involved including the horse, the groom and the exercise riders, the trainer, etc. - the folks that are up before dawn, greeting their charges in the wee hours of the moring and who are still with their champions late that night to see them bedded down and well.
