After the racing is over

Postby Sylvie Hebert » Fri Dec 03, 2010 7:09 pm

Once again horses were picked up at a track(won't name it here to protect horses) bones sticking out, rotten feet, skin infections,so sore all over, lame, ulcers, rain rot, tendons, ankles, and more ..and some raced in the last few weeks.
Situation is sure not getting better, horses always the victims.
They cannot get rid of them at the meat auctions anymore so let's starve them.
They really suck all the blood out of those before getting rid of them, inject their joints repetitively, run them sore, push them to the limits and when they are really done:want us to "find them a good home".
Well, let me tell you, riding horse people will not take them,we have to keep them for months at high cost,to no avail for some, find them places in rescues or give them away hoping they won't be abused or we have to do the right thing,in your place, put them out of their misery "humanely" with a needle...
My grandmother had left me some money "to do good with" not a lot,but almost all is gone now, mainly in those mercy killing.
And i am running out of horsepeople friends to take "just one more horse,he is so sweet,please...i will pay his vet bills,he will really be a good [school-trail-companion-whatever]come summer you will be happy he is there, how about free shipping, i will take him back or trade him if he is not perfect"...some are now wary of taking my calls,i understand, they have to feed them and it is not so easy to explain to you kids or spouse:no i just don't need a new car,i will keep driving that piece of junk to feed another of Sylvie's rescue, another one that made money for someone we don't even know and was discarted like a used kleenex after use.
When are breeders, trainers and owners be held accountable for this?
If there is a God,and i believe there is one, I and all those poor horses souls will be on that jury come judgment day,and I for one will show no mercy.
So many desperate cases,so much pain in those eyes,so many crushed hopes,so much useless concerns,so many sleepless nights, such despair...
And they say they love horses...sure glad they don't love me.
The sport and industry survive not only because of the champions that are remembered forever but also because of the losers that are so easy to forget...

I was always pro-slaughter from the standpoint that a quick end is sometimes just a whole lot better than the alternatives.

Yep. Slaughter is a necessary means of disposal. It is very shortsighted to suddenly remove this mechanism without replacing it with another viable option to achieve the same service.

Without a slaughter sale market, ultimately, I think that the horse industry is going to have to follow the dog/cat overpopulation model of public animal shelters with the same euthanasia protocols. Basically, kill shelters for horses. And why not, since apparently horses are now classed as pets, not livestock, and thus the ban on slaughter of these animals? If you can kill the puppies and kitties, then you better be able to kill all the pretty horses, too.

I am a HUGE proponent of REFORM of the slaughter industry. The focus and popular energy should be put into creating and enforcing a humane slaughter industry, meaning the creation and enforcement of improved animal transport systems, processing, and kill methods. Slaughter does not have to mean suffering. I think this is a point that has been forgotten by too many.

FWIW, I totally agree.
