Belly Button Dawn is a race mare I've been following for several years since 2007 when she raced in my last homebred's very first race. I've kept up with her via Stable Mail.
"Belly" last raced on the 19th at Golden Gate (Race 7? I think). Per the Stable Mail Results alert she "Finnished 8th by lengths" (out of a field of 8 mind you). Per the 'Comments' on the race she "Broke down" after being in 1st at the 1/4 mark by 3 lengths....but it did not show her as finnishing by lengths or at all....
Can anyone here who is at GG or has contacts there tell me of her current status?

Hi Jellac,
According to the charts it doesn't look good for her, she was "slammed" by another horse after she went down......TJ

TJ - Thanks - I was afraid that the outlook for Belly wasn't very good given the paucity of information....but I left a VM for her Trainer at GG's Stable Gate earlier today and so far haven't heard back, so appreciate your reply. She was a very game race mare - totally a 5 furlong, front running style specialist and when at the top of her game she was just shy of being of open stakes quality at SA and Hollywood levels. You could have made as sure a thing as any bet can be by making a side bet that she'd be first out of the gate and first at the 1/4, 1st at the 1/2 and 1st at the 3/4 post all day long - she gave it her all each and every time she was let loose and left all of her race on the track. When she lost - it was usually between being 1st at the 5 or 5.5 furlong mark and darn near dead last by the 6th. An all or nothing sort of horse.
Did her jockey come out of the fall, OK? (Hector Romero I think is his name?)

Jellac go look at the replay www.calracing.com it sorta shows it and it doesn't look as bad as the print makes it sound, I hope. She is a pretty mare from the looks of her as she is on the lead until the bad step. The announcer does mention both riderless horses coming along on the outside after the event.

The annotation on her pedigree says she was euthanized on the 19th.

Rest in Peace Belly Button Dawn -
Many will miss your thrilling, totally honest, put it all on the line front running style and many who have known you well enough to give you a hotwalk or a rub, ride you in your morning works, to change your shoes or wrap your legs on the backsides of Hollywood, Santa Anita, Golden Gate and your brief forays at other tracks like Lone Star and Remington, the track in Alberta and the bullring Fair Circuit track which name escapes me will be mourning your loss.
This mare was ever an honest servant of her Owners and Trainers, the Players who bet her and the Racing fans who followed her whenever she raced.

Hi Jellac,
Very nice tribute, thanks for bringing her to our attention.....she showed her speed to the end....her 1st 1/4 in 21.2....RIP, TJ
The Jockey Club does not have a death certificate on file for either mare which I thought was required when horses die on the track.
It may mean nothing because this is Christmas and all (and paperwork could be backlogged) but it would be helpful to know who annotated PQ and how they know what happened.

Hi Sysonby,
I was wondering the same thing....unless the PQ annotation was posted by someone involved with the horse? There is nothing out there in print concerning the horse or the riders, other than the riders taking off their remaining mounts on that card. TJ

When she got slammed by the trailing horse she broke her neck.

I want to thank all of you on this board who took the time to poll your contacts/resources and provide me with this certainty as to Belly Button Dawn's sad fate. It's one of the great attributes of this group that so many are voluntarily willing to 'fill in the blanks' for someone else located at a distance from the facts/source but feeling a strong connection none the less. Certainty - even a sad, final certainty - is always better than a discomforting uncertainty.
I did watch the video of the race and held out only small hope that she had somehow miraculously survived that crash from the rear. Thanks again for the thorough follow-up - I can let go now....where as long as there was a sliver of hope/uncertainty I continued to grieve and mourn while my doubt kept me hoping for a miracle - all at the same time.
A terribally unfortunate circumstance given that her jockey at the first instance of a slight bobble in her stride had done the right thing pulling her up immediately - which was no small feat as he had to combat her front running raceing spirit the entire time - only to get hit from behind by the straggler in the race. Both jockeys went off their mounts at the impact and I am concerned as to how they came out of the accident. It appears that the other horse, Ballet Ribbons (I think?), was able to gallop on so hopefully she is unharmed.
