I can't believe that Im answering this question. Its just obvious.
Its winter time here owners/trainer don't want their horses running in the mud so they can scratch a horse or two. Either the horses didn't like the mud or they didn't want to chance an injury. It showed the conditions where SHOWERY.
Its not like they run any race with a three horse field all the time.

Please Karen, a little rain and they want to pull out. Try running in the snow. Don't get me wrong, occasionally we will have a 5 field or maybe a 4 field but not for that kind of money. I would just like to catch one of those races sometime is all I was saying as I am sure everyone else would.
I am not sure the east cost owners would back off a race because of rain or snow(for that matter) as much as the west coasters. Could it be that it makes the horses hardier, stronger in the long run. Just a thought.
Overall it is for the safety of the horse so you are probably correct. Definitely do not want to start an east-west thing here. Just wish we could all catch one of those race

Since you were not there you don't know how much rain there was.
Since the trainers and owners were there, they make the call. They are there. Those people are there, they know their horses.
Im not saying the rain is or isnt as dangerous as snow- I would know we get four to six feet a year. You can't take Pen horses and trainers and compare it to Ca. issues, weather ect. without being there and knowing their horses. That's why there races that were canceled in the past because of the weather, Santa Anita must have spoken to trainers, agents, jockeys and staff and got their ideas and thoughts.
