Advice on the Texas Thoroughbred Racing Industry
Can anyone offer me some info on the thoroughbred racing industry in Texas? My boyfriend is relocating to Grapevine, TX, (he is a pilot and will be based out of Dallas Love Airport), and I am undecided about making the move for myself. I'm trying to get a feel of the industry out there, i.e. the tracks, the texas bred purses, the stallions. Based on the bloodhorse stallions list for the last few years, it seems to me the stallions out there are not as attractive as in other states, i.e. California, Florida. Where do you Texans all send your mare to breed? KY? How are the Texas bred purses? How about the Fasig Tipton sales? Fortunately, Grapevine isn't far from Lonestar Park, so the logistics couldn't be better.

Hi Valley,
That question would get a better response on the thread listed here on PQ, Texas TB Forum. TJ

Hello Valley Girl,
Each state has it advantages and disadvantages. It is all what you make of it. It has been a very tough environment in Texas the past few years, but I think there are some bright spots on the horizon.
As for the stallions in Texas there are some good ones. Valid Expectations, Early Flyer, Special Rate, Too Much Bling, Uncle Abbie, Wimbledon to name a few.
The Texas Bred program is OK right now. My personal opinion is that those in the program today will be able to take advantage of the changes that look very likely in the next two to three years.
I think you will greatly enjoy Lone Star Park.
The area that you are looking to move has several nice boarding and breeding facilities as well.
Good luck to you. Hope you make it to Texas.

Hi VG,
Good to hear y'all are coming to Texas. I would really recommend you make a visit to Valor Farm in Pilot Point which is easily accessible from Grapevine. Donnie or Ken will show you around and you can see their roster of stallions, especially Early Flyer (he's my favorite). I would also highly recommend them if you are looking for a full service boarding facility. You'll love Lone Star Park and all the friendly folks in Texas!
