It's a kind of adult version of "play like"!
I think before you bail on this issue, consider that Zenyatta has over 66,000 fans on Facebook alone! Every single time a new diary post is made, hundreds, literally, respond on her web page, plus hundreds more either like or respond on her Facebook page. Consider that several other connections of horses have followed suit. Uncle Mo has his page, and "he posts" on his diary. It's a fun fantasy type of experience....it's a way for fans, who otherwise have no way to make a connection with their favorite equine sport's figure, to "tune in" so to speak.
I think, too, that part of the enjoyment, at least in the case of Zenyatta, is her fans just don't want to let go of her. She captured the hearts of millions of people. She is teaching people now through transitioning into another phase of her career a lot about the backside of the sport. It really is hard to discount the total dedication that the Mosses and the Shirreffs have had in staying in touch with Zenyatta's fans. Make no mistake, it's a lot of added work on top of their no doubt busy schedules, and yet, they continue. Why? They could just phase it out and "move on", but they don't. There is absolutely no explanation other than they truly love the horse and they truly do love and appreciate all her fans who have made her a phenomenon.
By the way, it was Zenyatta herself who drew people to her...as Priscilla Clark so eloquently pointed out, it was "the incredible light of her being as much as the thrill of her races that got us dancing. Zenyatta was transformative."
Her connections responded and built on what she started, and in doing so, have pointed the industry toward an untapped pr bonanza for their horses and the sport.
Several very crusty sports writers and industry bloggers are just as besotted with Zenyatta....if you doubt, read some of Steve Haskins blogs and his recent "Visit with Zenyatta", complete with pictures and narrative. Brian Zipse, Bill Shanklin, Joe Drape (NYTimes)....you would be surprised who occasionally shows up on Zenyatta's Diary on her web site to respond and join in a harmless bit of fantasy!
