Perhaps the constant self-deprivation as far as eating goes has an emotional consequence. Or neurological. i.e., they have to substitute drugs for food. It is not at all easy to make these weights. I've heard horror stories.

There is a long and somewhat sordid history of woes for a few of the jockey folk - Chris Antley, anyone?

Lots of disposable income....just like any professional athlete, means there will be a sector who get in trouble with drugs and alcohol.

Jessi hit it on the head....too young and all that money coming in.....it usually leads to drugs....as Madelyn said.....Chris Antley, Mike Hole, recently Eibar Coa also with domestic violence charges....seems the two recent domestic violence rider's both got hurt riding shortly after their family dispute.....but Coa's career could be over. This isn't limited to Amercan riders...top rider, Stathi Katsidis dead due to drugs in Brisbane. It goes on and on....many may not rememeber Tommy Wallis, he rode races for Woody Stephen, another who succumbed to drugs. You would be shocked at the big name trainers and jockey's who are/ were addicted to drugs or alcohol. TJ
