Random Drug Testing Rule For California Jockeys Approved

Postby zinn21 » Tue May 31, 2011 1:25 pm

See link below to full story. From the CHRB 5-29-11 Action Summary:

>>The Board approved a rule to allow random drug testing of jockeys, apprentice jockeys, and drivers in a step to ensure the safety of all race participants. Under the new program, an unannounced, random drawing of no more than nine names will be conducted by the stewards – once during most meets in California, twice during meets lasting more than six months. The jockeys and drivers whose names are drawn will be tested for marijuana, cocaine, opiates, and phencyclidine (PCP). Chairman Brackpool indicated the Medication and Track Safety Committee could at some future meeting begin the process of considering whether other categories of track personnel and racing officials also should be subject to random drug testing. <<

Only 9 drug tests per meet? Am I reading this right?

I believe you are reading it right. That would mean a potential 18 random drug tests at all the big meets and "no more" than 9 each at the smaller ones. 18 tests would pretty much cover the majority of most riding colonies. Now if they test 9 per fair meet that would equate to 63 tests. My guess is that they will test fewer than the maximum with the inclusion of the "no more than" clause..

Why no test for methamphetamine? Are they afraid they couldn't come up with enough jocks to have a race card?

IMO, they ought to be testing every one with a CHRB license. Period.. maybe not owners but trainers on down.

They started this at Gulfstream during the past 2011 season. It also included the gate crew and the Stewards. TJ
