It finally happen,market bottomed out
In the past few months unable to sell anything or give away anything either, and my phone rings constantly with people wanting to sell or give away horses, and good ones. Some pleading for a home.No luck...my barn is full and no takers, sorry.I have some here since last fall ...and nice ones too.they are slowly eating me out of my home...And it kills me to see some so-called dealers going to the tracks to get free horses, with promises of homes, only to bring them to the auctions or killers for a profit.Nothing moves except hay and grain...and price of those is going up all the time.So please don't be stupid, look at the economy and the market before you produce more horses and verify to whom you give your animals or better yet consider humane euthanasia.

First PM who you are and where you are located.I did give away 2 horses that i picked back up at the meat auction 4 months later, one is still here...and recently one that got re-sold right away at Lachute auction the next week and i missed it by 1/2 an hour.I will not send those horses to an uncertain faith. They will be put down first.

WE are in the same situation. We have so many horses, older mares, two stallions, and several young horses who we cannot afford to get to the track right now. There is no market, especially since we are in Ohio. The babies could be nice prospect if we could just get them going.
Would love to find homes for the older mares and buyers for the young horses -- it is impossible.

The ones looking for horses want to pay $500. or less and has to be sound, good mover, over 16 hands and quiet....and evidently at that price make no mistake,if unsatisfied won't lose much at auction or meat...

Sylvie, you said it, it has def. bottomed out! The only ones that are able to show up in the winners circle are owned by millionaires at the least.
Breeding is still going on like crazy, where the hell are all these horses going to go? When is the Industry going to finally step in and put some regulations and rules down to begin stopping this problem?!
This breeding just to breed is just plain silly. Look at all the horses up in the corner, good beautiful pure TB's for under 500 dollars! Yet they want to breed MORE!
The industry had a jump in promotion with Zenyatta, now she is gone.
What's there to look forward to?
And you are right about the grain and hay prices, we are having a tough time this month for the first time in a long time for that, but they will all get what they need, it will take giving up on other things in life to do it but we love our horses and they get what they need.
There has just GOT to be some regulating of the breeding of all these TB's and of course other breeds as well. I am also for putting them down calmly instead of slaughter. Why cannot this be done?
You know, when I see a photo of a mare and foal now, I used to think, oh, how cute, now I think, I wonder what the future holds for both of them. That's so sad.

Economist are saying that if the U. S. economy continues at its same lackluster pace unemployment might drop to 8 percent, but if it double dips as many forecasters are saying will most likely happen the U. S. can be looking at 12 or 13 percent unemployment and that doesn't include those that have just given up which could raise the numbers to near 20%.
The deficits of trade that the U. S. has with other countries like China, Japan, Saudi Arabia and other oil producing countries, and western Europeon countries is the culprit. If we can't sell are products then our economy goes stale. Lackluster manufacturing is driving salaries down and jobs overseas. China, most importantly, isn't interested in the problem, but they will be when the U. S. and the rest of the world don't have cash to buy their knock offs. Unfortunately, China coming to its senses is too far down the road to be of any help for us now. When they do realize the problem, there will be people starving in the streets of Bejing.
Obama has just pledged to other Democrats to raise taxes on the rich. The Republicans want to cut spending and the deficit. Neither will work. The economy is stale because were not producing products that other countries want to buy. As far as the racetracks are concerned. Suffolk Downs can't fill its daily card. It is really the last of the viable New England tracks and Bill Veeck's book "Thirty Tons A Day" predicted this back in the 60's. Maryland tracks are just keeping their heads above water. WV, NY, VA and PA are surviving on the backs of OTB parlors and casinos. TX issues and problems are discussed more on the General Board of this website than in the halls of their state legislature. I'm not sure what is going on CA other than it needs to get Stronach to upgrade its track surfaces and drainage for safety. OR is keeping its tracks open from year to year and no more. And as other states with racing start to fail then KY will be the last to plummet as high priced day fees and breeding programs look for a tube to fall through. CD has long been surviving year to year on the backs of the Kentucky Derby. Keenland survives on backs of sale and racing, but even the big money foreigners are cutting back although someone bought an Indian Charlie for $600K in MD.
Personally, we've stopped breeding completely. Couldn't sell a horse if we wanted to. I just completed reading a couple of books on the industry and both suggest that the only consistent money to be made in the industry is being a high end stallion owner. Jim Squires in his latest book calls the members of the exclusive racehorse groups like the NTRA and Jockey Club DINNIES in honor of Dinny Phipps, the chair of the JC. The Dinnies are as worthless to horseracing as our congress and president are to the United States. And there is this guy, U. S. Rep. Weiner in NY who can't keep track of his lewd Twitter pictures. Our tax money is actually going to pay the salary for a man who either just realized that he could have a respectable hard on or he realized that padding would create the elusion of a respectable hard on. How nice of him to send a picture to a young college student on our time.
Sorry about your problems Sylvie. I am sure there are many that would like to help, but the ship is sinking and their are more than a few leaks to plug. Best wishes.

One of the thinhs about the unemployment figures is once you have been unemployed for a certain period you are no longer counted as unemployed when figuring the unemployment rate..
The unemployed rate is really a "newely unemployed" rate and masks a very serious problem.
And i certainly don't want a government agency telling me if, when or how many horses I can breed.. adam Smith economics works as some of the above posters have testified.

speaking of unemployement, I would like to say something.
My husband has to work 50 days straight every single shift, 12 hours a day with no days off because the people that are hired then get fired because :
1. Can't pass a urine test
2. Can't do the job right
3. WON'T GO TO WORK AND POST STUPID THINGS ONLINE
I wouldn't look at the rate, I would look at the idiots that get the job and can't or won't maintain there position. I am so sick of people who won't pass their urine tests. And yet these idiots contribute to the umemployement rate.
The company that he works for has full medical, visiion, dental everything including the Benny card with Child Care included, 401 K retirement. Yet no one wants to work the work!

Griff: You are absolutely right. We don't need government setting quotas. Capitalism has a record of working, but the sad state of affairs that our country faces is going to need some government incentives and regulations. The American financial institutions are up to their necks in greed and self enrichment. While they sit on their low interest fed money, leaving it uninvested the stock markets are beginning to tumble in response to continued bad news.
Current estimates are that 24 million Americans are going to be either unemployed or under employed by the end of Obama's term as President. Not to put the blame solely on the President, the congressional leadership of both parties have not been too savvy about correcting the problems either. Senator Reid's home state of NV has the highest unemployment in the nation near 12% at the same time the other NV Senator, named Ensign, is fooling around with the wife of his chief of staff and now declines to run for another term. Just goes to show that there is precedent for NY Rep. Weiners lewd twitter pictures. You've got to wonder about Weiner though, he is a newly wed. Wouldn't you like to be a fly on the wall, when Mrs. Winnie confronts her husband about the "expanded briefs" pictures he has been publishing from his Twitter account.
Current estimates show that the average wage in the US is only up 6 cents since last year. Although the cost of living is increasing rapidly because of the cost of fuel, the federal government continues to hide the true rate of increase in a confused formula that deminishes the real rate of inflation. When the federal government tells us that annual cost of living rate is 3%, we can honestly figure that it is double or triple that. Fortunately, for the most part, the American public is not stupid and their is a voter backlash. The only problem is that we can't be sure that we're not replacing one buffoon with another clown.
As for the horseracing industry, the Dinnies have been sitting on their asses while greater and greater segments of the industry suffers with the true economic problems that have been festering for at least two decades or more. It will not be long before the casinos have control of the industry and the Dinnies are left to wander the backsides to wonder what happened to the good old days.
The simple fact is that horseracing institutions like the JC, NTRA, and Breeder's Cup are closed guilds replete with a group of narcissitic individuals who happened to be born in the right families and who are genetically predisposed cocktail parties and social conversation unrelated to anything productive. These men, and some women, apparently find it easier to ignore the marginal activities that are ruining the game such the illegal drugs, unsafe track conditions, jockey and backside safety issues, need for reasonable compensation, and the over all enforcement of regulations. When it comes to TB sales, the complete control and influence of auction houses is becoming problematic because it is a system that virtually eliminates the small breeder from advantageous marketing of their stock. There is no incentive for a small breeder to invest in good stock when he or she knows that despite good effort auctioneers are putting stock from major breeders or high end owners in preferential places during the first days of an auction. Not to mention the excessive cost surrounding entry of stock to the auction which depresses small breeder income.
As for racehorse rescue and retraining, the Dinnies have only given luke warm attention to the problem. It appears that they still turn a blind eye to the over population of the OTTB waiting placement or sale and though CANTER and other organizations do excellent work, the rescues continue to remain subordinate to horse racing officials who are interested only to the extent that they have to be.

Exactly! We have 5 positions that we have been trying to fill for over a year.Good pay, full benies and vacation after 3 months. People work just long enough to get money in their pocket and they never show up again. There is no work ethic in the US anymore. I remember working 2 jobs 7 days a week, now that is equivalent to walking up hill both ways to school. Sad times for sure

I have not been able to find a job since November 2008.
1-I have a BS degree and 30 years+ experience in analytical chemistry
2-My experience is with current technology. Usually I am the one training other people
3-I have excellent professional references
4-I can pass anyone's drug test 24/7, 365 days a year
5-I'm hardly ever sick. My last absence from work was for cataract surgery.
6-I have no skeletons--no time in prison or mental institutions. No surprises
7-I'm not only always on time, I don't quibble about extra hours or even being called in on a vacation day. I've worked Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years and any other holiday you can think of.
8-I'll work shifts other than 1st, but after doing rotating shifts for 3 years, my health was trashed. I'd prefer to avoid that again.
9-I've worked with all kinds of people, including all kinds of people who were no fun to get along with.
10-I don't panic. I've been in buildings during explosions and fires, and put out a fire in my own lab once.
11-When I sign a confidentiality agreement, I keep my mouth shut
I've applied for all sorts of jobs, include animal caretaker at Petsmart and attendant at the local laundromat. Nothing. It doesn't help being 60.
