the horse has EPSM. From what I understand this steams from the brain(?) and is a neurological issue. They mentioned on HRTV that they changed his diet to one with higher fats and low in sugars and starches (like a diebatic diet it seems) and he's back to normal.

just thought that was interesting.

is EPSM the thing that a horse gets when they stand kinda like they are trying to balance themselves from falling down?

You must mean EPM; Equine protozoal myeloencephalitis.. One of the best horses I ever owned came down with it. It's an awful disease.

I was not aware a diet change would cure and am skeptical that it will. EPM is an organism that gets into the horses digestive system usually by ingesting contaminated possum feces. The organism eventually locates in the spinal cord where it slowly damages the spinal system. So don't know what a diet change would do to an organism that attacks the spinal column but if true that is great news.

Actually, EPSM is a different disease than EPM, although more noted in drafts & other breeds than in TBs:

Dietary management is something they try for EPSM.

you'd be surprised at the number of TBs with EPM that is undiagnosed.. I've delt with a handful maybe 6 or 7 and diet wasnt a concern more than Rx antibotic suspensions.. Hagyard (I think) had info about it.. or Rood & Riddle.. cant remember.

One of the treatments that is suggested for "tying up" is to add higher amounts of fat to a horses diet. It helps to reduce muscle tension from what I've read.

ESPM is a disease that prevents the horses dietary system from fully processing starchy dietary grains. From what I understand, it occurs predominately in draft horses.
