There is an ad similar to this one in Reno, inquiring about a gelding that came off a trailer and to their house. What happened is- the windows where down and the trailers door ( back) wasn't shut all the way. They claimed that he bumped it, turned around, broke the lead rope and off he went. Atleast thats why they said, but they still have the gelding, they said that he has a tatoo and no one wants to come forward to claim the horse.
The Jc doesn't have the id of the currenty owner that lost the horse.

Real easy. Unless the traffic sees something and somebody drives up beside you waiving their arms for ur attention, there's a lot that goes on back there that you worry about, and can miss. That's what makes driving a load of horses so stressful. I had one fall over in the trailer one time laying on its back on the floor with a rear hoof caught in the trailer bars. Another horse standing over him front legs one side rear legs the other. unable to release the hoof. unbelievable luck that first place I stopped the old man had an electric metal saw. would never have seen it but for the lady that drove up beside me pointing. She saw the hoof caught in the bars. Likely everybody that drives horses over time has some stories!

I remember many years back at a hunt meeting, when a young married couple had loaded their two horses in the trailer and actually forgot to close the back doors. (Both had imbibed a little too much of the tail-gating spirits) They just got in their truck and drove off with the two back trailer doors swinging in the breeze. Fortunately, a number of folks saw what was happening and started to scream for them to stop. It would not been too far down the road, if they continued, that the horses would have back themselves out of the trailer and on to the road. Fortunately, the booze had not effected their hearing, so castrophe was adverted.
I've seen a number of occasions, like Ratherrapid refers, when horses have gotten over the retaining bars or have gotten their legs caught in hay bags that were hung to low.

There was just recently a group of horses burned in a trailer. The driver was rolling down the road with no idea the trailer was on fire. It was attributed to a hot cigarette butt flying in through the open side vent and igniting the hay/straw in the center.
