I personally believe that there has been a loss connection between the potential fan and the racehorse. The connection between the fan and the athlete is so critical to what makes a professional sport viable.

Came across this dated blog with stats that surprised me. Even in 2005, I'd have never guessed I would have seen this.

[i]FAN INTEREST IN THOROUGHBRED RACING UP FIFTH STRAIGHT YEAR
March 21, 2005
Percentage Increase Greater Than That of Any Other Sport
The number of people in the United States who said they are interested in Thoroughbred racing increased for an unmatched fifth consecutive year, according to national consumer research data released today by the ESPN Sports Poll, a division of TNS Sport.
Fan interest in Thoroughbred racing grew by 5.1% last year, increasing from 35.6% to 37.4% of the U.S. population (age 18-plus) to yield a total fan base of 78.5 million U.S. adults. The 5.1% increase was the highest registered by any sport in 2004. The 2004 data also shows that Thoroughbred racing has climbed into the top 10 sports in terms of fan interest, finishing ninth among 29 sports measured by the ESPN Sports Poll. The ninth-place ranking is up from an 11th place finish in 2003 and a 14th-place position in 2001. Cumulatively from 1999 to 2004, interest has risen 19.1% (31.4% to 37.4%). According to this latest data, Thoroughbred racing is the only sport whose fan base has increased each of the last five years.
Thoroughbred racing fan base (among U.S. population, age 18-plus):
1999: 31.4%
2000: 32.3%
2001: 33.8%

ah yes hahahah, you guys are trying to actually watch horse racing on horse racing television and santa anita isn't running lol. on mondays after what.. 5pm CST until Wednesday morning, you can pretty much forget horse racing on HRTV.
And honestly, I can live with that. on mondays I usually don't do anything except aussie racing at night, or fair grounds when it's open, and on Tuesdays i don't do anything at all. it's my "off" day. I think it's most people's "dark day"
My only thing is, i would rather them play like, tehy used to play the old "this week at santa anita "reels back when I first start watching and you can realive the whole jewel princess and searenas song races, I would like to watch those from time to time. It hink that would be perfect Tuesday TV. like they do the breeders cup at night on mondays.

For the last several years my brother in law who lives on the east coast has tried to convince me to put a horse in training in the Mid Atlantic Area. So when I am not in meetings or traveling I try to catch races from Laurel, Delaware or PA whenever possible to see how specific trainers do and to try to make an enlightened decision. It is impossible when HRTV, the only station to show Laurel is not showing racing...HRTV stands for Horse Racing Television, does it not? I cannot watch replays from Laurel on CalRacing which is another peeve of mine.
2 races back I had a Rapid Redux party and invited several friends over. One had never seen a horse race other than the KY Derby so it was an interesting conversation and we had a good time. He joined me yesterday during the "rodeo auction" and shared in my frustration because he thought we could bet each other for who was buying dinner. This is what really happens during "business trips"

We get HRTV and TVG so when one is not televising something I want to watch, the other is. I really like that HRTV has expanded it programming to other disciplines. I started working with horses in KS and OK, so I'm familiar with western disciplines. The majority of my journeyman work involved field hunters, hunter jumpers, and hacks. I ride and so do our daughters, so I enjoy some of those equine basics shows. My youngest daughter is a fox hunter, so I enjoy the eventing. And, of course, my first love is horseracing.
All that being said, I can understand your frustration with having to watch something that you are not interested in.
As far as sending a horse to the east, I hope you do. PA, NJ, DE, NY and FL have great programs. VA, New England, and MD are limiting the scope of their racing for various reasons and to be honest, I've not enjoyed MD racing for some time.

I think that's the point shammy and i can't fault them for that
HRTV, understands it's market is not the same as TVG's for the most part. Some fans, given the choice of the two, are going to watch HRTV, and those tend to be, more times than not, serious handicappers and horseman.
Plus Laurel doesn't run on tuesdays, really the only 2 tracks that run on tuesdays are parx and delaware both of which I am pretty sure TVG covers

so I am watching HRTV and they just had this commercial for the "horse calculator". this dude with this cigar hanging out his mouth with this gold chain at the track is killing me. come on man, that's not very nice to portray the people who pay for your site like that.

Aluma Wallet is being sold at Walmart now!
You can't get two for the price of one, but you don't have to pay S&H. My wife tells me if it is advertised on TV, Bed, Bath, and Beyond has it. Remember that guy Dyson who marketed the vacuum cleaner. He began marketing a fan without blades. BB&B was selling them for $400 plus.
I don't think they are moving to well, pardon the pun. Reminds me of the Ionic Breeze air cleaners that put expensive mail order catalog out of business. And what about those porceline knives?
Crystal: I didn't know they made pajamas with old fashion butt pockets. I've never seen them advertise on HRTV or TVG. The pajamas my grandfather wore were what we called old fashioned. They had a butt flap for expediency sake, but in that era night time "expediency" was experienced outside even during the winter. Splinters were a big problem back then also.
Now we have "cuddle duds" and zippers!
Modern technology is wonderful.

Laurel is running on Tuesdays. http://www.laurelpark.com/Horsemen/Cond ... efault.htm
3 of the potential trainers that I wanted to watch had horses entered. I give up. Just signed up for the racing channel for $50/month. I am sorry I don't care about anything but racing if I am on HRTV, if I want another discipline there is RFDTV, Honestly, I think this may just be another sign that we are not meant to race in the east
