Steven Speilberg has a new movie coming out on Xmas day. The WAR HORSE trailers look very interesting.

Here is a link that discusses a Civil War war horse statue that Paul Mellon was involved with. Not the same as the movie, but interesting.

There is a very popular Broadway play based on same the book. Instead of live horses they use life-size marionettes - I have only seen short clips, but have been told the staging of it is quite remarkable. It cleaned up at this years' Tonys.

Guessing I'll need a box of kleenex instead of popcorn to watch.

My daughter has heard that the movie is very graphic. She must have seen another trailer. Hundreds of thousands of horses and mules were killed during WWI so with that in mind, I would guess I'll be purchasing some extra kleenex myself. My wife will need bath towels to dry up her tears.

WW2 was devastating to the horse population as well. Most people don't realize that the German invasion of Russia moved on horse power--they were largely not motorized.

I saw the amazing London production of "War Horse" in the spring of 2009, and the puppet horses were genuinely awesome in the true sense of that word.

The simple-minded script/story, adapted from a children's book, is emotionally manipulative and blatantly sentimental, which is fine in the context of a theatrical experience employing imaginative stagecraft and magical puppets. I have to wonder how it will play when weighted down with real horses and locations.

I understand that a national company will tour the country next year. Some clips of the stage production are viewable on youtube.

Ten million people and 6 million equines were killed. I saw the play, it was incredibly beautiful.

Was it the Lippizaner's that were saved from being wiped out in WWII by being snuck out of Austria? I can't remember what the breed was but there were not that many of them left and it's taken a long time to get the population to a good number again.

HOW do they get it to look so real? Amazing.
