NO PROFIT NO PAY

Postby Shammy Davis » Sat Feb 04, 2012 2:56 pm

Caught this out of the corner of my eye as I watched HRTV this afternoon. An advertisement for Spendthrift Farm that suggested that if you didn't make a profit on your breeding, you wouldn't have to pay. Check their website but could not find anything related to the advertisement. Was I dreaming? I'm thinking this deal is too hard to believe.

Saw the same thing. If it's true they'll be standing in line. Must be a catch to it..

It makes breeding to the likes of a Malibu Moon a possibility for a great many mare owners, particularly if they looking toward the commerical market.

It has to do with the stud fee being paid from proceeds from the sale. I believe the idea was if the foal doesnt bring the stud fee you don't pay anything. If it makes money than you just owe the stud fee.

They call it "Breed Secure" - it is a good deal for the few stallions they offer it with. The deal is if you sell the resulting foal as a weanling you get the first $6,000 then they get the advertised stud fee, then you get anything else. If you sell as a yearling you get the first $12,000 then they get the stud fee, then you get anything more.

It is an improved version of the Darby Dan Profit Protection Plan they did back in 2005. Very fair to the mare owner taking a chance in a bubble year stallion.
A difference of opinion is what makes horse racing and missionaries.
