Urgent! Need advice on Rhino vaccinations!

Postby 3nutmeg » Sat Dec 15, 2012 1:07 pm

I need to know if it is safe to introduce a new barren mare that is not vaccinated for Rhino to a 8mo. pregnant mare vaccinated for Rhino? The new mare has been off the track for 18 months.(3yrs.old) on a small farm. We are in central NY. My vet says the new mare needs to be vaccinated for rhino and quarentined for 2 weeks before introduction. Her vet says it isn't necessary. She says that if the new mare is vaccinated it will put the mare and her horses and my mare in danger for Rhino. It was suggested to use a killed virus vaccine. We are a very small farm where horses do not come and go, and so is hers, but she does rescue a few TB. I've heard a lot of things about the rhno vax. Like the immunities only last about 3 months, and some horses don't develop the immunities. Who is right my vet or her with 40 yrs. experience in the business and her vet? Is central NY a hot spot for Rhino? Please give me your opinions and info ASAP!
Thank you

personally if it was me, I would vaccinate with a killed virus Vac. We used a vaccine on our filly once that had SERIOUS ramifications. If you are going to do it, use a killed Virus vac.
And it is possible that she can develop signs of having Rhino in which case you DO NEED TO HOLD ON TO YOUR RECEIPT .... from experience I know for a fact that if your horse developes a lab made " reaction" they will pay for the vet bills... I KNOW that .... it is possible....

Thank you, your advice was helpful. I don't think I risk bringing a Rhino unvaccinated mare to the farm.

You could vaccinate the mare where she is, and get her a bit later on.
So Run for the Roses, as fast as you can.....
