About Alydar

Postby hungdynasty » Fri Mar 18, 2005 7:50 am

I just make a brief review on Alydar, a great sire in his years but a disappointing sire of sires. I would like to hear your opinions on him, the reasons why a great sire like Alydar turned out to be a bad sire of sires.

Alydar's son Benchmark is a fine sire as his runners are making their mark in Calif. racing.

As for the other sons of Alydar most of them are not the real mc coy.

Alydar is a higher echelon BMS with an AEI of 1.94 CL 1.72

When I researched thousands of stallions for their lifetime AEI Alydar was 2nd. with an AEI of 5.21 thats places him above Nasrullah and Northern Dancer.

Alydar is like Secretariat a better BMS than a sire of sires. Look at Alydar's pedigree and you will find the same breeding patterns that Secretariat has.

Can you expand on Alydar as a broodmare sire?? I've acquired an Alydar daughter and would be interested in thoughts on succesful breeding patterns for his other daughters.

Both Alydar and Secretariat are brilliant speed over very strong stamina. Both of them rather resemble their dams rather than their sires, and they threw foals to their damline rather than their sireline. This is not all that uncommon--Lyphard and Fappiano are two recent examples of the same.

It is possible that Alydar carried a large-heart gene; his 5th dam was sired by Blue Larkspur.

Somethingroyal the dam of Secretariat passed on her dominant genes to her sons. This sex linked breeding pattern being mother son, father daughter.

Sweet Tooth the dam of Alydar, passed on her dominate genes to her sons. This breeding pattern was mother son, father daughter, the same breeding patterns of Secretariat.

Both Secretariat and Alydar became superior BMS because of this sex linked breeding pattern.

hi guys

I submit that Alydar's son Alysheba is one of the most "under-the-radar" broodmare sires in recent years.

His daughters have produced some genuinely top-class...and downright brilliant horses.

An Alydar daughter, eh? Hmm...

Alydar has done very well when combined with Storm Cat (a source of the Bull Lea/Blue Larkspur nick found in Alydar's 3nd dam); though the individual mare is very important. What is the name of your mare?

Both Storm Cat and his son Hennessy have produced superior nicks when bred to Alydar mares.

Alydar produced superior nicks when bred to mares that trace to the sire line of (Fair Play)

Alydar was bred to 17 mares that traced to the sire line of (Fair Play) and produced 12 winners and 3 SW.

Alydar produced inferior nicks when bred to mares from the sire line of (Gainsborough) and (Rabelais)

I do not agree that Alydar resembled his dam Sweet Tooth more than his sire, Raise a Native. I was fortunate to see Alydar up close and personal in his stall at Calumet a few years before his death, and was awestruck at what a full bodied, athletic and handsome horse he was--far more so than any photographer had been able to capture. Not only was he the same deep rich color of his sire, he had his sire's beautiful hind quarters and strong shoulder. I remember at the time Alydar was just recovering from a mysterious illness that was well publicized--no one could determine why he was wasting away, as if he had cancer. Turns out the new paint in the horse's stall included toxins which were slowly poisoining him. Even though Alydar was not 100% recovered when I saw him, you couldn't help but think that this was one of the most exquisite Thoroughbreds ever born. (So unlike his nemesis Affirmed, who I always thought more resembled a broodmare in conformation than a breeding stallion.)

The mare is Cupid's Joy. Produced nothing of merit, but she hasn't had a lot of chances so far....
