Brisbane Cup

Postby Radish » Fri Feb 03, 2023 4:11 am

The Brisbane Cup Queensland Australia.According to records Forester was the first winner in 1866.....BUT...
Junius Australia’s first truly outstanding racehorse won The Brisbane Cup in 1826 and 1827.Also I see Bennalong won in 1830 and Bay Camerton won in 1831.
The most unbelievable thing is.....Junius,Bennalong and Bay Camerton(and obviously other horses) won their Brisbane Cups at a track called Camperdown just near Sydney (New South Wales)
I cannot find any other records and would like some of you clever people to look into this.
Some people may not know but the Camperdown track is in New South Wales some 600 odd miles south of Brisbane (Queensland)
Am looking forward to everyone’s responses.

The Brisbane Cup won by Junius was named in honour of Sir Thomas Brisbane, the Governor of New South Wales from 1821 -1825. To avoid confusion it is often referred to as the (Governor) Brisbane Cup. He also established a penal colony in Queensland around that time which is the reason the city of Brisbane is named after him.

Junius was inducted into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame - the Colonial Era - in November, 2023.

I did a search for "Brisbane Cup" and had the results ordered by date, beginning in 1926. Here's the link.

The article for the 1827 Cup (on a subsequent page) mentioned that the the winner Junius also won in 1825.

Happy hunting, this is too big of a time rabbit hole for me !!
