Smarty jones page in data base.
Smarty Jones says he is bred my boom boom stable (earlier it was cow bell stable) and now there is a shetland pony picture on his page.

Someone has decided to be an ass (I'm beginning to wonder if it's our resident troll). I've had to correct it twice a day for almost a month now. Everything from the state he was bred (bred in Alaska a couple days ago), the owner (Crappy Poop Pepper Chapman was the last one I saw) and earnings ("won BEEEEELION Dollars")
Nice to know Miles cares about the integrity of the site and works to protect it so diligently, isn't it?
Smarty Jones
Perhaps put a restriction on editing Smarty Jones. There will not be any updates until the first foal from Smarty in 2006.

I don't think this is Brown. This is some other retard ... and I'm fairly certain I know who.

That would require Miles to get involved ... and he's too busy trying to excavate his head from his ass.
We tried locking it down once before ... and found that, while you couldn't edit it, someone could still delete it and once that happened you couldn't add it back in.
Miles doesn't give a damn. He just expects volunteers to maintain the accuracy and for people to pay for inaccuracy.
I sent half a dozen emails and several posts to the board practically begging him to lock down about 20 stallions standing in Turkey because some jackass over there keeps adding phantoms. No response. 4 emails and two public posts to change the birth year on Le Ciel. de nada. "Well, I never got the emails". Yeah, he must not get a lot of emails since I know for damn sure he's ignored several others who are emailing him with things that only he can fix.
It's precisely this reason that I absolutely refuse to give the sonofabitch any money. Why should I pay for information that is being DELIBERATELY sabotaged and the site owner refuses to get off his lazy ass and do anything about it?
For christ's sake, it would take all of MAYBE 40 minutes to write a scrip into the site that would prevent people from adding horses with birth years that haven't happened yet. That would eliminate 90% of the crap I deal with on a daily basis right then.
He'd make a great politician.

Oh, Lynn's moved on to bigger and better things.....no longer content to just add herself as the owner of existing stallions, she's now making up imaginary ones. The long lost foal from when Unbridled travelled back in time to cover Shenanigans was standing stud in NH.

Well, I just looked up Mr. Jones out of curiosity, and everything looks pretty normal until you see who his broodmare sire is--they have CIGAR in there!!!! That's not right, is it? Also, there's no picture at all anymore. What gives???
If I had to guess, I'd say the person messing with the info is someone who knows a bit about horses, has used this site plenty in the past, and is making some sort of statement about how crappily it is run--probably also pissed that people actually PAY for this garbage. Seems like an awful lot of energy to expend on a useless cause, if you ask me. I say, just don't pay for it (I certainly don't), and get over it already. There are so many better causes out there you could spend your energy on!

Taken some steps to prevent this
I've taken some steps to try to prevent this from happening again. I'm afraid though that it's only going to be a temporary solution, but I'll see if I can come up with additional measures to prevent it. I did fix the delete feature so that it's not possible to delete/edit a horse's pedigree that's been locked a while back. I think I need to extend that to adding additional information as well, but it's tricky because you don't necessarily want to lock it if the horse does something else.
If the database is going to be open to the public, it's hard to prevent tampering of this sort if someone wants to and unfortunately we've managed to piss a certain individual off somehow.
I've got a whole list of horses (besides Smarty Jones) that I have to spend time correcting today.

How about adding a manditory log in field requiring a valid e-mail address, and a review on entries?
Most databases can be indexed by any field, add a automatic date and time field. These could be reviewed, or held or batches could be reviewed before being added to the main database.
Seems like it would be easier to review a new batch of entries and weed out all those from "known bad apple" before the data is added to the main database, than to try to sort out them from the main bulk of data.
On another matter, please give Sam a free membership. Or appoint her as the review person to search out bad data. She does a huge amount of work and should be compensated in some way.

Personally I think we should have to enter our user name and password to edit any pedigree...at least that way it would be known exactly who did it.
