Fly Predator...does it work?

Postby ZiaLand » Mon May 16, 2005 2:02 pm

Just got a flyer in the mail on the Fly Predator biological fly control product. With all the rain we've had this spring in New Mexico, flies are going to be a major problem this summer.

Does anyone have any experience with the Fly Predator product. Does it work, and can you recommend it? Any drawbacks?

Much thanks,
Laurie

I saw the ads.....wondered the same thing. According to the ad for 15 horses it would be 38. a month worth of bugs for us. Not bad.

I like the natural approach, don't want to spend $$$ on expensive automatic spray systems, these fly predators seem just as easy as sprinkling fly bait around the barn. At present i'm wondering if its like the old "sea monkeys" scam.
Biting flys are no friend of mine. Them little bas*^&% like to bite me whether i'm in the chicken barn or the horse barn. They turn my dog's ears to bloody scabby sores that i've forever pasting with various concoctions ( Corona is my favorite). I'd love to hear someone's unbiased testimony. Hope someone steps forward.

We heard lots of good things about them, so we bought them one year. Unfortunately, due to timing and a bunch of other idiot excuses, we didn't exactly get them "placed" correctly. I think I remember the flies being not-so-bad that year, but not enough to be sure that the fly predators had anything to do with it. I keep wanting to try them again... maybe this year...

We use fly predators here in Maine and we have for 8 years. We neglected to do it one year and had a severe surge in flys!!! Sooo.. We noticed it definitely works to have them. Without them we really noticed the flys. Ours actually jsut got here today for the first 'batch'.

Dear Flys,

Postby Final Voyage » Mon May 16, 2005 7:17 pm

You have bit my dogs :( until their ears bled, you've bit my horses and bothered them so they stomped all day and made riding no fun :x at all. Some of you came from the neighbors cows and made my farm your home. You deer flys (i think) bother me when i walk through the shade of the trees on my horse and swarm around her head and make her ears bleed  . You cutarebrae sting my baby kittens  and your larvae are impossible to all get out so the kitties   die. You also hang out in my chicken's barn and make gathering eggs painful for mY person. Thousands of you have been caught in stinky traps, on sticky fly strips, and killed a few of your number with yellow bait. Still you multiply.
Consider this your notice of eviction from my property. Any of you that remain shall suffer the consequences of the  PREDATORS!!! :P

Signed,
AHHNOLD SCHWARTZAKITTY  :x

I use them and if you start early (I started too late the first year) they work great. I use these and blue streak fly bait for the adult flies that come in from neighbors (buggers travel up to 1/2 mile). It makes a big difference for me.

For what it's worth, we were given one of those propane "mosquito magnets"... seems to help around our house with mosquitos and the newly-hatched black flies (if you've never experienced them, you're LUCKY!!). The bag is always full.

Glad someone asked... always wondered about those! Would be worth it for us, for when the deerflies come out in August...

Used them last year & noticed improvement. Probably would have seen even more improvement if we'd put them out earlier & followed the application tips more closely.

Also tried the Mosquito Deleto last year. It didn't work very well at all, but I've heard some were recalled, so maybe it was a defective one.

Thanks everyone for your feeback. :D I think I'll go ahead and order this year and see if it keeps down the fly infestation that we're expecting. I'll post back later and let you know how it works.

Fly predator does work . . . as long as you get started with it early and place it properly. (As per instructions). Got mine from Alabama.

Now . . . how to deal with ear mites besides continually treating inside of ear?

One more vote of confidence for fly predators. They really do work- I had almost no flies last year and we had lots of rain.
You have to be sure to spread them out over your pastures though and not just deposit in one area.

Use pennyroyal oil 1 scoop in your bath water and the flies will take a hike, as they dont like the scent of it.

Put some pennyroyal oil into your sprayer mixed with anise oil and water and spray your stalls and barn walls.

Hang a bunch of tansy in your stalls as the flies and mosqu. dont like the scent.
Those without sin cast the first stone.

Louis, would Pennyroyal be safe around in-foal mares? I know it causes miscarriages in humans, but am not sure at what dose.
