Breeding for PERFORMANCE

Breeding Thoroughbreds is a gamble at the best of times - however the odds will be in your favour, if you match Dam and Sire CORRECTLY.

To breed a Stakes Winner you have to start with a correctly bred mare - and then breed her to a stallion, which compliments her breeding.
In most cases this is not a "Fashion" Stallion. You have to know which crosses kill speed and stamina - and which crosses enhance these qualities.

It appears to be wise to spend a few hundred $ to have a good match - rather than to hope for the best and spend thousands of $ and lose another year (and more) on an inferior foal.
In most cases the matching fee (and more) is recouperated by a lower Service Fee - and much better performing progeny.

In the case of colts turning into good Stallions - there is usually much more to be made at Stud than on the track.

Let's give our horses a fair go and improve the breed at the same time.

Gunter you are a wise breeder, as those breeders that dont believe in nicks will take 1 step forward for every 3 backwards.

Bloodline affinity's or nicks are positive and negative as they either cross producing superior nicks or not and produce inferior nicks.

Look at these inferior nicks that went against the grain.

Devil's Bag was bred to mares that traced to the sire line of (Gainsborough) and produced 5 winners from 20 mares.

Kris S. was bred to 13 mares that traced to the sire line of (Teddy) and produced 4 winners.

Marfa was bred to 11 mares that traced to the sire line of (Teddy) and produced 3 winners.

If these breeders did their homework they would have avoided the stastic that produced these inferior nicks.
Those without sin cast the first stone.

I have to agree with you, when I look at how much some yearlings are going for... they'd have to win some bigtime races to recoup the purchase price, never mind trying to make a profit above and beyond that... so the owners have to be aiming straight for the breeding shed...
