Garlic danger!

For all of you that like to use garlic for fly control here is an article I ran into....
Garlic Causes Anemia in Horses
Many horse owners feed their horses garlic to fend off flies and insects, but in a study performed at the University of Guelph and published in the American Journal of Veterinary Research confirmed that horses will voluntarily eat enough garlic to result in anemia. Horses ate voluntarily gradual amounts of garlic and brought up to the maximum amount (4.4 oz for an 1100-lb horse twice daily) over a 41-day period, and feeding continued for an additional 71 days. Research found that an intake of only 3.5 oz for an 1100-lb horse did cause anemia. The anemia resolved itself over a five-week period after stopping the garlic, but damaged red cells and abnormally high MCV (mean cell volume) were still detectable. Intake of over 3.5 oz twice a day for 10 weeks was sufficient to damage the red cells. This study also found that horses are more sensitive to garlic effects than dogs.

You can do too much of anything, as thats alot of garlic to eat.

I have been eating two raw cloves of garlic for years and I am in good health.

One woman had a virus infection of her lungs and her doctor told her she had 3 months to live as antibotics did not kill the virus infection.

This woman went and juiced 40 cloves of garlic and poured vodka over the garlic in a glass jar and drank all the above and went back to her doctor for a check up.

Her doctor told her she was cured and her doctor wanted to know how she killed the infection.

Wasn't the 40 garlic's that killed the virus...it was the vodka. Everclear would have worked just as well.

garlic overdose

The study also states that a horse would have to eat TWO CUPS of garlic a day to develop the initial symptoms of Heinz body anemia (which is the type of anemia the study is talking about)

Interesting. This is the same reaction that dogs have to members of the onion family, raw or cooked. Onions have much more of the responsible chemical, thiosulphate, though, than garlic. It's generally okay for dogs to consume small amounts of garlic, but I stopped putting it in my dogs' food, as I realized I was adding it to the raw meat because it made it more appetizing to ME, not to them.

To Lei Owen: When my friends get close to me they can pick up the scent of garlic and take 3 steps backwards. LOL

Some TB love the scent of garlic and some dont.

Garlic danger!

Well... some don't like it! My daughter Megan learns to ride in a ridingschool and I often give her a few horse garlic 'sweets' (however, sweets you can smell it from far away) to give to the ponies overthere which all love them, but our thoroughbred mare won't take them, I tried it several times!

Stop feding him the garlic and see if the dry flakes of skin stop falling off.

If your not giving your TB olive oil or flax oil your TB might have a dry flaky skin as in people that have the same problems their diet is lacking in EFA or Essential Fatty Acids.
