Hi MT,

Congratulations on your filly! :D Here's the link to the Jockey Club's interactive registration page:

https://www.registry.jockeyclub.com/Reg ... N=74518031

Definitely check out the rule book so you don't come up with a name that's awesome only to go 'drat they won't let me use that!' Also the online names book lets you see if it's taken so you don't waste your choices. There's a page there on recently released names and there's also (I bet of high interest for you) a page on fees and whatnot on the site.

Can you tell us the breeding? I love playing these games of name suggestion. You can always offer up the breeding and maybe put up a picture on the www.horsenamegame.com link on this site and let people put up suggestions and vote on them if you want. If you already have a name or a few names in your head that you might use, please share!

About fees: "If the naming attempt is made after February 1 of its two-year-old year, a naming fee will be charged. "

I assume she's already registered but it not: "If all Requirements are met by December 31 of two-year-old year $775.00" and then "If first name attempt is after February 1 of its two-year-old year $75.00"

One bit of advice I would give is to be acceptable to all 3 names you enter, even if the first one is open on the database. I've gotten my first one knocked off for wierd reasons. The last one was Babbette. The name was open and I got whacked for some wierd reason. they automatically give you the second choice in that case, so be sure of all 3. One thing I've learned is to just take the name other than fight it.

Does anybody remember who Babette was ? How about Ramar of the Jungle's monkey. I thought that was a good name. I ended up settling for Snookums, which sounds all cozy, but is not like her.

I second that. Definitely have all 3 names be ones you can live with. Joe, the only thing I remember of a Babette is a character on the tv show Gilmore Girls. I googled it and there's a few people out there named Babette but the bigger one is a clothing designer. Maybe it's a copyrighted brand name so you couldn't use it.

Egads ... This makes me feel old.

The ONLY thing that came to mind was an old cartoon about two mice and a cat that were suppose to be a play on Laurel and Hardy (I think). I just remember the pudgy mouse yelling "Babette" ... and then later hypnotising the taller mouse and the cat into thinking the cat was a horse and the mouse was a cowboy.

It's late ... I'm going to bed now.

unnamed filly

Postby MT Horses » Fri Oct 14, 2005 6:11 am

Thanks all, I am familiar with the quarter horse process and it too does the same, often having your first name choice knocked off so we are always careul, and definitely know better than to argue the assoc. choice,
I thank you for the cautions very much.
The filly is by Anziyan (By Danzig) and out of Bedford Street, who had some success on the track( By Castle Guard). I have not even gotten her home yet, actually got 2 a 5 yr. old Fruition's Jasmine (daughter of Fruittion and out of Special Census by Beau's Eagle) and then the 2 yr. old.
Well, I suspect I will have to cross the palm of the Jockey Club as she is a January 2003 model, oh well the 75.00 is not bad.
I will go look at the rules for naming but definitely open to suggestions
SOOO lets hear your ideas and also any info you have on these 2 horses.

Good luck with your filly. Be sure if you are starting to get more involved in thoroughbreds, you stop by OregonRacing.com and get your stallion registered in the Oregon stallion roster. Annual stallion feature begins next week, so now is a good time.

You can submit names one at a time if you like, and wait until that one is rejected before trying another choice. The JC seems quite capricious in what they allow and what they don't. We recently named thre yearling fillies. It took 2 tries for the first, 1 for the second and more than half a dozen for the third.

One of the names we submitted for the last filly was Felicity which was on the JC's "recently released" list. Even so, they turned us down because it used to be the name of a TV show. I wonder why they didn't mention that to Will Farish when he named his horse Cheers.

One more thing...if you submit names through the online interactive registry, the JC won't contact you to tell you whether the name is acceptable or not. Instead, within a day or two, go to the link called Naming History and you can see the result there.

Oh, and in case anyone is interested, here's what we ended up with:

Street Cry x Tricky Bird Shriek
Elusive Quality x Breakwater Ninth Wave
Gulch x Amirati Raffles Light

Thanks everyone, it is nice to be able to ask these questions to those who have "been there done that" We are fairly new to the thoroughbreds, have always had some but only for our QH breeding program. I am a pedigree buff from way back, so I have some pedigree knowledge but thats about it, My daughter has been bitten by the thoroughbred bug pretty badly, she has had her unraced stud(by bertrando) for almost 2 years but now has decided to expand, now she has added the 2 mares. No big dreams but she would like to run 1 on the brush tracks locally. It sounds to me like the whole naming thing could be tricky and unpredictable too. Well, we will have to try our hand but figure we better go to Washington and pick them up first, no need to put the name before the horse LOL Thanks all and I am really glad you are there to help all us newcomers

For your 2yo you might try something like Dancininthestreet..

I always submit one at a time so that if it is turned down and i have thought of something else really good in the mean time I am not stuck with a second or third choice that maybe weren't so good.
The last filly I named I got rejected for "copyrighted". Well I knew that it was not so I wrote a email to them and had the name reviewed and got it!
My argument was that the name I choose was not copyrighted and that a similar name which is a song title and the title of two books had been allowed.
The name I picked is Favorite Mistake (a oops filly in Sept. )
But My Favorite Mistake was given out in 1999 and is definately copyrighted. I actually have an email from the JC saying they were wrong.
If you can not laugh at yourself, you will not be able to take it when I laugh at you! ;)

Madelyn, you and i are on the same wave length, that was one of my choices too, My daughter is amazed that 2 people who do not even know each other could think like that. She says it must be True horse people, I say it runs in the line of GREAT MINDS LOL Another one we are considering is Danziginthestreet, do we see a pattern forming here LOL
Thanks all

thanks, MT, I think I have a great mind... you could do variations on a theme, like Dancin'inthestreet, Dancinginth'street, etc. Danzinginthestreet is also pretty cool.

Well, I am sure you have all seen the post about the new mare, I remember Demons Begone in the Derby, what did he sire?
Hey NYBreeder, that is pretty funny, you challenged there name and they backed right up, do you thinkit was an honest mistake? Well, great to hear all your input,TTYL
