Large Heart analysis Where How
Where does one obtain the information about a specific baby to see if he has a reasonable chance for getting the large heart gene, either through his sire or his dam?

Kind of depends on what you believe.
If you follow the research from the X-Factor books, then the gene/or genes are on the X chromosome.
So this is a sex linked gene.
A large heart stallion will NOT pass his large heart on to any of his sons.
He will pass his large heart X to all his daughters. This may be expressed, or not depending of something called X chromosome inactivation.
side note, females have two X's but only need both X's for the brief time between fertilization and implantation. Then one X in each cell shuts down, and stays shut down. Females are a patchwork of cell types, with different X's.
Best bet is to breed a Large heart stallion to a daughter of a large heart stallion. The colts from this cross have a 50% chance of getting the large heart, and daughters will either be Double copy mares,(two large heart genes) or single copy mares which may or may not express the large heart.
Don't know if this is the info that you were looking for, but hope it helps.

How do you know whether someone is a large heart stallion?
Danged, that's complicated.
Temple Grandin, the animal behavior expert, says that if humans intensively breed for one trait to the exclusion of others, they will inevitably cause associated changes that they didn't plan for, both physically and in behavior.
Perhaps the emphasis on raw speed as opposed to speed over distance that modern TBs are selected for creates the unsoundness that we all deplore so.
It's not just training and pedigree, but chemical alterations in genes associated with the ones that make speed.
I cannot recommend her book, Animals in Translation, enough. It's fascinating.

I personally think it also has a lot to do with how yearlings are pushed to grow too fast... not giving them the time to grow on their own, and letting bone form properly, etc...

Pin Oak gets some of their colts hearts scanned by a vet (don't know his name) and he can predict (pretty accurately) how talented they will be. Changeintheweather was predicted to have a good 2 year old year and then drop off as a 3 year old, which was very accurate. Don't quite know how he can determine this (size of heart?)
