I once bred a filly who's sire and dam were both listed on the database as passing on the X chromosome to their off-spring, i.e. Dayjur and Ubi Star.
Recently, I began looking at a sire by the name of Muqtarib. When I run a mating with an X chromosome query on him as the sire and the above-mentioned mare, the database displays no shaded areas for the top-line of the pedigree with the mare and her family being shaded as representing the passing on of the gene. However, when I run Muqtarib's pedigree individually, his dam Sicklah, and her parentage represent the passing on of the gene.
After all that long-windedness, my questions are simply this: Is Muqtarib not recognized as passing on the gene due to the fact that his first crop of runners are two-year olds of 2004? Or does some empirical data exist that precludes him from being recognized as potentially passing on the X-chromosome? And further, what is the liklihood that a mating between Muqtarib and Ubi Star would result in a foal that possesed this gene?
As always, thank you all in advance for your insights on this matter. I greatly value all of your wisdom and opinions.
Best regards,
J.D.

Muqtarib does have an X chromosome, but it is not clear that he's carrying the one you want.
As a son of Gone West, he doesn't carry the Secretariat/Princequillo X. And on his female side the known carriers are in the wrong spots.
Is there any proof the Muqtarib is a large heart stallion? Heart scores and such?

xfactor fan,
I was telling my wife last night that I was hoping you would reply since you always seem to understand my ramblings whenever I have a question regarding the X Factor.
In terms of Muqtarib, I am unaware of any heart scores on him, but I will contact the farm tomorrow and inquire as to whether they are aware of any such report.
My problem is this, I am torn between him and Dayjur as choices to breed Ubi Star to this upcoming season. On the one hand, Muqtarib has had 4 runners with two winners (both SW) in his first crop with the "possibility" of passing on the genetic trait; whereas I know Dayjur will pass it on and that the window of opportunity of breeding to him is narrowing since he will be 18 years-old this coming breeding season.
If you remember, you and I had a brief discussion this past Spring regarding the possibility of phenotype/body type being somewhat related to this issue as it relates to the gender of the foal depending on the X received from the mare. Nonetheless, if I do receive a filly from any mating, as a smaller breeder I find it tantamount that the matings I devise with my broodmares must be able to take advantage of any and all genetic opportunities possible so as to remain competitive.
Based on the limited information that you know of this situation, if you were me, which of the following matings would you choose (bearing in mind that the ultimate goal is to produce a foal who is capable of sprinting up to a mile on the grass):
1.) Breed the 11 year-old Ubi Star to the 18 year-old Dayjur with the knowledge that the cross has produced a very fast stakes winning filly in the past who definately will pass on the the X chromosome to future progeny?, or:
2.) Breed the 11 year-old Ubi Star to the 9 year-old Muqtarib who seems to be off to a promising start with limited runners knowing that the likelihood of passing on the X chromosome is limited, but whose pedigree definately suggests a propensity to sprinting on the grass?
As usual, I respect your opinion on such matters. If at all possible, please elaborate on your suggestion of a mating so that I can make a well-informed decision.
Best Regards,
J.D.

Took a look at Ubi Star's breeding.
Couple more questions, does she look like Spend a Buck, or Island Whirl? Also have you had her tested and do you know her heart score?
Given Spend a Buck's record, he very well might be a large heart stallion. Didn't race very long, were there soundness problems?
Going back on the female line of Spend a Buck through Battle Dress you could be picking up the Display heart through Dark Display/Battlefield/Amorial, or again via Amorial/Tellaris/Pharis.
Ubi Star will have his X, that is a given. Seems like a pretty good X to have given his record.
The other X could come from Island Whirl.
The bottom side of her pedigree is interesting, and there are a lot of large heart horses in it, but very few in the correct places to pass on the large heart gene.
Breeding back to Dayjur, will give you a shot at the Blue Larkspur heart in a filly.
If you get the Spend a Buck X also, you could have a double copy filly.
Given that you've breed Ubi's Star to both stallions before, which gave you the better foal?
Hope this helps.

How sure are you that Dayjur carries the large heart gene?
Took a quick look at his bloodlines last night, and while he does go back to Blue Larkspur, it is through his son not daughter.
He is listed in the second X factor book as being a Blue Larkspur stallion, but I wouldn't take any information in the book as true without a second opinion.
Would you or anyone else take a look check to see if the pedigree is correct, or I've missed something?
Thanks.

Dayjur does indeed carry Blue Larkspur in a LH position. It would come through Mr. Prospector through Sequence, who the daughter of Miss Dogwood who is the daughter of Bull Dog and Myrtlewood who is the daughter of Blue Larkspur and Frizeur. Mr. P isn't supposed to have had a large heart but many of his daughters seem to have one which could have come from their dam so more research is needed.
