whoa.. understatement. We are huddled up waiting for the sun to crack the frost because we can't venture outdoors.. its +14F.

Snow tomorrow!!! Gotta get the rest of my outdoor Christmas decorations up and then I can run around after the snow and take lots of "winter scenes"... pregger mares, snorting and blowing steam, yearlings running around, wreath on the barn, lights and bows, etc. etc.

It doesn't happen every year so it pays to be prepared!

Oh Thunder...its going to be a lonnng winter isnt it? I have a friend in Gold Creek I give you all credit for living where it is so cold and snowy. I am sure you are all bundled up and ready for it though.

I am alittle worried about our winter...the weather channel just said that our temps are below average and its more like January than December....hoping that means an early spring???

We are not bad here..in the 20's and sunny with a trace of snow but its that dang wind.

Madelyn..sounds beautiful by you...I want to see pictures!

Ayuh, same here this morning... and I am not acclimating well to the cold this year! I've been dragging myself away from the warmth of the woodstove to trudge out to the barn...

I blanketed everyone last night (in preparation for today's winds), as I heard the temps were going to drop...

And try finding goat blankets... they don't have much! Luckily, I hit a sale at State Line & picked up two foal blankets for $19.99/each... only thing I was worried about is whether the belly strap would make it around—they're a little on the plump side!

I've been wondering how everyone else's animals are faring... this year, our guys don't seem as tolerant... the goats were shivering a little on a few cold mornings (which is why I decided to get blankets this year) and the horses' coats don't seem as thick to me. I know they say it's the reduction in daylight that grows their coats, but I have to wonder if the warm fall didn't affect them... :?:

It's 23 here with freezing rain. Cant get the truck out of the driveway, soooo can't get to work  Does gripe my a** though. They give us 3 emergency days a year (w/o pay) that doesn't go against our attendance record. BUT, they've denied use of those days today due to operational requirements so there goes my perfect attendance. Never makes sense to me.

It got to -7 here in Spokane last night with about 7" of snowon the ground. This massive cold coming down from the Canadian north should start breaking up a bit by this weekend. Until then, my golden retriever runs out the back door, does his business and runs right back in. He usually wants to chase the squirrels and birds, but it's too dang cold for his paws to stay out there for very long! Think SPRING!!! :) :)

Keep the stories coming.

It's making it hard to slip into self pity about it being 50 out and the heater being busted AGAIN!

The last three mornings have been either just under or over zero, and as a crossing guard, I know my poor digits will be frozen solid!
Last night, I went online and looked up reusable hand warmers: there are four kinds out there.

1) Liquid/solid fuel

2) Battery operated (mittens or gloves, the most expensive)

3) Microwavable - these are either pocket sized, or palm sized. Some are made to be put in specially made pockets on mittens or gloves

4) Sodium acetate. This is the newest kind. A small pouch of liquified sodium acetate is activated by flexing a small metal disk. The stuff crystallizes, and gives off heat.
Once the heat wanes, the packet is re-energized by boiling until the crystals all dissolve back into liquid. Once cooled, it's good to go.
(I ordered a kind called HotSnapz, the palm sized variety.)

It's bitter cold here, too. You northerners aren't the only ones getting hit with this Arctic blast. They are saying tonight may be the coldest night on record since 1979. Fortunately, the 60 mile an hour winds we've been having the past few days aren't adding to the wind chill tonight.
