hay every body hoping allis well this is a story about a Seattle Slew granddaughter now please read her story

Thoroughbred

Size: Large
Age: Baby
Sex: Male
ID:

Notes: OK to all of you with week tummies hold on to your breakfast................. In the last weekend of September an emaciated 7 year old TB mare and her sickly and starved 3 month old colt entered the rescue program. They had been owned by a local vet. Yes, a vet. He bought the mare at a local horse sale in May already bred and saw a chance to make some money off the baby. The colt arrived on Memorial Day. He did nothing to give them proper care. He was told over 2 months ago that she had abscesses on both front feet by the blacksmith. He never lanced or cared for them. The infection ate away at her inner foot . They are filled with infection puss and blood. She can not really walk under her own power and spends so much time down that she has bed sores. Her body condition is a 1.1 on the Henneke chart and the baby is about a 1.5. Both of them have rain rot and baby has pneumonia. Local law enforcement could not do anything as there was a tub of water and a moldy round bale in her paddock. NY law is really cruddy. The only way to get the horses was to buy them. A private party from CA put up the money a neighbor purchased them form the vet so he would not know a rescue was involved and they entered the rescue. It has been about 2 weeks now and both are doing well. They have gained a good amount of weight and the baby is running and playing now. Mom is able to walk slowly on her own now. Her feet are wrapped and she is wearing a pair of OLD MAC boots. They have a long road ahead of them that will take tons of money and time. The mare we have named Delta Dawn and the baby is Willie. We wondered will he or won't he make it. Hence his name. She is named after he woman who made it possible for her to be here. Dawn is the one who truly saved their lives. Any gifts for them now would be a big help. Money, hay, feed, anything at all. Check out our 'Beer for my Horses' page. Her story is long and drawn out with lots of very gorey details. We gave you a brief overview. We are only going to think good positive though for this pair as they are fighting hard to recover. UPDATE1 We have discovered that our Delta Dawn is the granddaughter of famed Triple Crown winner Seattle Slew!!!!! Little Willie has some pretty impressive breeding too. Both are doing well and Dawn has gained a ton of weight. Her feet are starting to heal and grow back but it will be months before she is able to walk without boots. Willie is feeling good and running and kicking up his little baby heels. There was not permanent damage to his respiratory system. It has been about a month and they are both on the road to being happy , healthy horses. the DA has reopened the case and the vet may be charged with animal cruelty. This is not his first brush with the law. The first 2 weeks or so to keep this pair alive was about $800, any gifts to them now would be very much appreciated. UPDATE2 Dawn and Wille had a good Thanksgiving, with plenty to eat. Both horses are doing grand. We are not sure but suspect that Dawn may be bred. Can you imagine! Dawn has grown a beautiful black coat, and a fairly thick one too. Willie is enjoying playing in the early snow. The DA's office tells me that the vet, Ronald Peters will be charged and have to appear in front of a Grand jury sometime in the months ahead. Dawn's feet are still on the mend but we are hoping to get a set of barn shoes on her this month. Willie is learining to eat in his own stall out of his own bucket and is doing great. According to the owner that had Dawn before the vet, she is a nice riding horse but not for a beginner. We have come to see that she does have a bit of a stubbon streak. She does seem pretty laid back though and not much seems to spook her. They are in desperate need of assistance. Any gift would be great. Stratagy Feed by Purina is flowing like water at our barn so a bag of that would be great. Hay, all kinds is alway welcome. WE MAY START TO CONSIDER PLACING DAWN. A LOT IS DEPENDING ON HER FEET AND IF SHE IS BRED. UPDATE 3 Well here it is - the moment we have all been waiting for! Dawn and Willie will get there day in court on December 15th 2005. Ronald Peters will have to answer to the grand jurry! keep those hooves crossed!! UPDATE 4 Well we had it from the vet today that Dawn is expecting! The baby will be born in the spring. Dawn will be staying here at the rescue to foal out and will need more support than ever. Stay tuned for more mare and foal updates

can u please help out if u could please read on

Hello to all. Well Thanksgiving is gone and that means the holiday season is upon us. Time to start shopping and send out those cards. How about sending one to a horse? Many people know the story of Dawn and Wille, our starved mare and foal.( See their story on our petfinder site) They have been here at the rescue almost 3 months now and their money is running dry, very dry. We are going to try a new fundraiser this holiday season. We want as many people as possible to send Dawn and Wille a holiday card with a one dollar bill in it ($5's and $10's wouldn't be frowned upon though). The cards will be hung in the barn and we want to try to get 1000 cards for them. Copy this page and send it to EVERYONE in your computer. We think this can be done. We think we can reach the goal. Please help out this mamma and baby. If you have already helped them out, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Please pass this on. Remember- the reason for the season started in a stable......... Have a healthy and happy holdiday season, Shannon Hahn Cards can be sent to : Dawn and Wille Double L Stable Equine Rescue and Sanctaury 9 Tilford Rd. Argyle, NY 12809

Yep, I have the pics of this mare and her youngster shortly after arriving to the rescue. A very good friend of mine, while vacationing in Maui, received a call from me at 2:00 a.m. in the morning, as funds were needed to secure this mare and her baby from this 'vet'.

Funds were wired and mama and baby were secured, and were walked just a short distance to the rescue. It was 'touch and go' for the first few days, and believe me, it's HARD TO BELIEVE THIS MARE SURVIVED!!

The mare is named after my friend in Cali., that provided the necessary funds for the pair - 'Dawn' and Willie the youngster was named as such as the never ending statement during the first few days were 'Will he' survive?

I have since found out just this past week, that the poor mare, in her completely exhausted state of condition, is also bred!!! So not only were the 2 saved, but now it's realized that 3 were saved as they surely would have died.

this story particularely hits home for me, as this 'vet' is local to me. I've had my hands full the past few weeks dealing with a different case of TBs being neglected, although under different circumstances (owner is older, not physicall or mentally able to care for the whole herd). such a shame that the animals are allowed to suffer by those that should know better. hopefully this guy gets nailed, big time.

I also know the name of Ronald Peters and NO ONE should send any animal to this man!!!
I used to live just outside Saratoga Springs.
I hope they throw what ever weight NY has on him.
The man is a menace, and shouldn't be practiving (imho).

Here is the information from Double L's Petfinder listing-

http://search.petfinder.com/petnote/displaypet.cgi?petid=5196506

The mares registered name is Windswept Lady, her youngster, a beautiful and leggy chestnut colt, is by the TB stallion, Hammer-

http://www.pedigreequery.com/windswept+lady

This rescue could certainly use some monetary donations. For those of you that know me (by phone/email), Double L Equine Rescue & Sanctuary is one of the many rescues we patronize. The founder, Shannon, along w/her husband, are devoted to the horses in their care, and I highly recommend this rescue for anyone wishing to make a contribution. ;)

Double L has assisted numerous times in the placement of horses from the surrounding New York state, as well as MANY horses shipped up to the Saratoga area from Penn Nat'l. Last year, I received a phone call from a trainer at Penn. He told me he had a horse that needed to be moved - WITHIN HOURS! Call went out to Double L, and the immediate response was BRING HIM HERE. Often times, the 'room at the inn' is full to capacity, but they've always been able to offer *something*, and in most instances, it has SAVED the life of the horse (by use of the alternate choice of a meatman).

Once again, I cannot describe the horrific condition this mare and youngster were in. To have seen her, it's absolutely AMAZING that she survived! We have all said, it was her will to live for the youngster by her side. The mare could barely put one foot in front of the other as her soles were ROTTED. Their condition was totally heartbreaking!

For anyone wishing to make a contribution, please follow the link above as it provides Double L's contact information. And please remember, even the smallest donation CAN and DOES make a difference!

For those that wish to contribute via snail mail, here's the contact info-

That poor mare, I wish i could take her home with me. Can you post more photos, whole body photos? You can't really appreciate the condition of her from the head and people might give more if they see the rest of her. And the colt, he's a cutie! Who is she bred to? Amazed that anyone would consent to breed a mare in this condition unless it was his buddy or his own stallion.

Does the sanctuary have paypal? I can't give anything to friday but PP would get there faster than a check.

Here are pictures of Dawn (laying) and Willie her colt, just shortly after their arrival to the rescue-

And here are pics of the mares feet along w/a sideshot-

Dawn (Windswept Lady, the mare) still needs to wear protective coverings on her feet to get around, but she's progressing wonderfully under the careful supervision of the rescue and attending vet. She has just also been confirmed in-foal to a buckskin stallion that was on the premises where she was neglected. She is due to foal in the Spring. It's amazing how this mare, in her terribly down condition, was able to continue to maintain pregnancy!

As you can see, Willie, the colt, is an adorable youngster. He's growing in leaps and bounds and has fully recovered from his pnuemonia. The veterinary costs for their immediate care as well as the ongoing care have become increasing, and so for anyone wishing to contribute towards their progress, donations are graciously accepted. And THANK-YOU!

The rescue is not set-up for donations via paypal, however, snail mail still always works!

I am amazed that mare survived. That vet should be taken out back and made to walk around on a carpet of nails. And starved. What kind of monster is he? And why would ANY DA not think this was an out and out case of animal cruelty?

How far along is she to the buckskin stallion? It might be better to get her to abort the foal so she's not wasting any recovery on a fetus too.

As for the legalities of the situation, last Thursday the case was heard before a grand jury, to decide whether to procede with an indictment. A decision is expected next Tuesday. There was plenty of evidence provided (factual) and that is what the bottom line is, the factual evidence and testimony.

I do believe, that like many of us on this forum, if I were presiding on this grand jury, I would have NO doubt of the neglect and suffering these animals endured.

As for the mares pregnancy now, she is believed to have been bred on her foal heat (Willie was born on Memorial Day) and so she is along in her pregnancy. The attending vet found no abnormalties with the impending fetus and she is doing very well now that she is eating and receiving proper nutrition and care, gaining steady weight.

I do believe that this mare was *very* near deaths door - and fortunate to have concerned neighbors and citizens recognize the severity of the situation. The mare herself is a real sweetheart, a true trooper by every sense of the word. She's been through hell...

Oh my, I knew I shouldn't have looked- that poor mare. I hope that man goes to jail. Hopefully the new year will bring good things for both Mamma and babies.

I just called that feed store, long distance from Florida, to also make a donation, to the rescue to go with the Strategy feed donation. Seven minutes & three times being put on hold & transferred later, I gave up. :(

Chanter-

I'm sorry to hear the troublesome attempt you went through. Possibly it's better to snail mail a donation tagged specifically for the feed? Many thanks! :)
