Does Anyone Have Experience With Air Transport?

Postby ZiaLand » Mon Jan 30, 2006 12:58 pm

Looks like I might have an overseas buyer on one of my horses, and I don't know the first thing about air transport of horses. I figured someone on this forum probably knows the ins and outs.

Can anyone give me any information, advice, leads or contacts?

You can PM or email me if you prefer.

Much Thanks!

Hi Laurie,

Can't help with the air transport info, but would just *advise* (not that you, of all people really need it) but... re: the "overseas buyer", make sure you verify the person (funds, references, etc. before you send a horse anywhere). There is so much scamming going on re: horses and money in general w/overseas stuff. (Or so I've read from time to time  )

Maybe calling a big outfit like Coolmore, that ships regularly by air might help. :? Wish I could be more helpful.

Zia,

I use Tex Sutton, they fly everwhere, and have alot of experiences with horses. I call the office in Kentucky and talk to Gail, as she seems to have all the answers. PM me if you can't find the number because I have it at the ranch and I'm at work. Laro

I have no info on this company and have never dealt with them. I just happened to come across their website today.

Hi Laurie - good luck - I hope the deal goes through for you!

Depending on where the horse is going, you will need to send it to Los Angeles, Dallas Fort Worth, Miami, New York, Chicago, etc - any airport that has the Combi or Freighter aircraft necessary to hold the upper deck pallets for the horses.

Depending on the age of the horse and whether it is a colt/filly/etc the quarantine requirements will vary

One person that can assist with any/all questions that you might have is Laura Minton at IRT. We used them to bring my filly in from New Zealand and they were just terrific to deal with:

I just moved 3 over with IRT, I have used other companies in the past and not done very well... everyone always just says you should've used IRT, so I did and was pleased. So that is just my experience with it.

:D

Thanks Ruffian. I appreciate input on the positive experiences.

Also, thanks for those who sent me notes of caution. I'll definitely be on my toes. I've seen some of the foreign scams and how they work -- generally involves "overpayments" for various reasons and the request of a "refund" for the overpayment, which was bogus to begin with (as is the purchase offer because they are only looking to collect and run, not actually purchase the horse).

The potential buyer's reasons for being interested in this mare seem genuine and believably, but I'll keep my radar on.

Thanks all,
Laurie

i would suggest you deliver the horse to a quarantine facility and have them pay you then. and the buyer can take care of the transportation from there...
