How to find the owner of broodmare?

Postby ISABELLA » Fri Feb 24, 2006 4:02 pm

Just wondering where I should look to find the owner of my horses dam?
I have looked on equineline.com but, none of the reports shows who owns the horse.
Thanks!

How to Find an Owner of a Broodmare

Postby Bedouwia » Fri Feb 24, 2006 6:10 pm

This is a real problem. I too am trying to find out who owns a broodmare that I used to own in her racing days. You can get a foal report, but it will not tell you who owns the mare. The Jockey Club does not have this information readily available to the public. If you find a way, let all of us know.

Foal reports give the breeder of the foal. Usually, only the owner of a horse (or a lessee who would certainly know the owner) will pay a stallion fee to breed a mare. In other words, a foal report WILL give the breeder's name. 99.9% of the time, the breeder owns the mare. 100% of the time, the breeder KNOWS who the owner is.

Its hard to even track down the owner of a stud much less a mare.

I tried without much success to find a stud last fall and then when I found myself looking for mate now I found another sire on the bred mares report that isn't open for business. Both stand in Maryland, Port Vila and Java Royal. Maryland Owners Asscoiation doesnt know where they stand either. From what I can gather Java Royal is not standing outside mares. Have no idea what Port Vila's story is.

Not sure the jockey club can help much either, I doubt they know I own the two mares I have.

You might try posting a "horses wanted" note at the canter sites. Trainers out there look at the board and might have some info on the owner they could pass on. You never know who knows someone who knows who owns a horse.

Isabella,

If you post her name or pm it to me I can go into my registration account and see if I can find out who owned her when she had her last registered foal. Like BJ said thats often the best way.
