GHOST ZAPPER - BC Classic

Postby Pete » Sat Oct 30, 2004 2:54 pm

Hi,

Congratulations to Ghost Zapper and his connections.

Powerful and impressive performance, 1:59.0 off a :47+ half. Ridden with confidence and much the best.

Roses in May showed class and some courage to test Ghostzapper while others had their hands full just staying within striking distance.

Awesome Again, a BC Classic winner, gets 2 BC winners including the Classic and justifies his $75,000 fee (despite sales averages). The non-defined theory of race conditions getting results from stallions gets a boost too.

Hope you all had an enjoyable and profitable day.

Regards,

Pete

The announcers claimed it to be the fastest BC Classic in history, and Ghostzapper broke the track record by 5 full seconds.

The two wins by progeny of Awesome Again were, of course, Ghostzapper and the longshot Wilko in the Juvenile.

Good day for Awesome Again's connections too, I'd think.
So many pedigrees...so little time. (C)

SPEED TO BURN

Postby louis finochio » Sat Oct 30, 2004 3:33 pm

Congrats to trainer Bobby Frankel and crew a job well done. The late Hall of Fame trainer Sunny Jim Fitzsimons said speed is dangerous as far as they can write a race. Ghostzapper is the beneficiary of the Awesome Again (Phalaris) and Relaunch (Fair Play) cross, as this cross is leaving their hoof prints in the history books. I noticed that Ghostzapper had a chopped tail, a trait found in euro racing.

Hi Pete ... Hi ZiaLand

Outstanding performance by Ghostzapper...he defeated one heck of a field in the Classic...in impressive fashion.

As for Awesome Again...he sent a very clear message to the racing world...as to his prowess as a sire. This is a dream day for his connections. Who could ask for anything more of a sire...a BC Juvenile winner and a BC Classic winner...on the same day (okay, he could have had 3 winners on the same card...maybe next time).

Wow... a very rare day for any stallion...indeed.

Respectfully

Hi FOS,

A stellar performance by sire and sons for Awesome Again.

I have a theory that I've never properly proofed past that when a sire gets a winner on a particular day there's a good chance that his get should do well on the same track in other races (this seems to have some validity with sire line and multiple tracks on the same day). In theory there's some sense to it - if one son of Awesome Again liked the track conditions, perhaps another will too.

I can't see how anyone can go past the combination of precocity and class that you mentioned as well as the fact that Ghostzapper was thought of as a speedball sprinter at one time. Versitility to the max.

The only knock on Awesome Again is a very low percentage of winners from foals (30%). His average winnings per winner was the highest of any 3rd or even 4th year stallion before the race, so that will only improve (to well over $100,000).

Adena Springs now looks prophetic in keeping his fee at $75,000, but will they raise his fee now?

Regards,

Pete

Shocked the beegeezus out of me! Never would have picked him out of that field--never in a million years. He sure steamrolled home, didn't he? Stronach looked mighty happy there holding onto the leadrope.

Hi All

What an impressive victory by Ghostzapper. He beat a lot of very good horses. This has to be considered one of the strongest fields of any classic ever run. What was Azeris connections thinking about? Pleasantly Perfect would have been suffice to scare me away let alone Perfect Drift,Roses in May,Funnycide[with his wonderful entourage]and The Ghost. Azeris has had her place in history for a long time. What is next?

Sincerely EK

I thought Ghostzapper ran one heck of a race.

And I'm intrigued by Pete's question: will Adena Springs raise Awesome Again's 75K stud fee? The good results today have to be weighed against his dismal 47K average at the September sale.

My guess is that the horse's connections will watch his weanlings sell in November and see how much of a bump they've gotten from today's two wins. Because if AA's sales prices don't rise significantly, even the current fee is hard to justify. Too many breeders are breeding commercially these days. Aside from Stronach's own mares, I would bet that the majority of his book are mares bred for the sales, and nobody wants to lose that kind of money--on average.

It will be interesting to see what they decide.

I didn't realize that Ghostzapper was only beat twice in his career. Both at sprint distances, but I didn't think he would get a mile and a quarter. Great runner.

Can I just say that Azeri ran her bloody guts out, and was great in defeat. She was trying her heart out, she got 5th. Her legs were stretched to the max and she was trying so hard. The top 4 in the race are good, good, GOOD boys, and she was the best of the rest. She never gave up.

To all the people who thought she was going to embarass herself...you were wrong. And too Roger Stein, regarding the "body bag", that was THE most unbelievably disgusting thing ANYONE could eve say.

Being a fan of Pleasantly Perfect, I was disappointed, but hey, the winner is definitely a freak.

Azeri

Postby fastappy » Sat Oct 30, 2004 10:02 pm

What's really important is that Mr. Pouslon has been satisfied and can sleep soundly tonight. He got the answer to that nagging question as to whether she should run that Great Mare, in the Classic. It's was no loss to bypass the Distaff and the accoutrement of winning another Breeders Cup race, afterall it was never about the money.

D. Wayne did a great job conditioning the mare, and Azeri ran courageously, but realistically most of us knew it was just asking too much to expect her to win that race. Azeri had nothing to prove, she's always been a champion.

Hi LSB,

In another thread I posted that high end stallions are judged by average earnings per winner and the number of G1 winners that they get.

Awesome Again was already close to $100K per winner before today. Add a new G1 winner and all of today's earnings and he seems perfect save the fact that only 30% of his foals have won.

Adena has the resources to send 80 or more mares to Awesome Again and frankly I'd be inclined to do so if I were then and he doesn't get outside support.

Before today this was possible, but the Juvenile (colts) and Classic may be the most important of the BC races to win in the commercial breeding community and I can only see his fee rising despite the Keeneland results. It was an AWESOME double :)

Pete

RELAUNCH MARES

Postby louis finochio » Sun Oct 31, 2004 5:28 am

Lets give some credit to those golden Relaunch mare's, Relaunch is enjoying a great year as a Broodmare sire. With the classic victory Relaunch will be elevated up in the Broodmare sire stats. If you are fortunate to own a Relaunch mare dont sell but buy more Relaunch mare's as their value is golden.

OK Pete, a couple more questions. Assuming you're a commercial breeder...

Suppose you had a mare you felt fit Awesome Again reasonably well. Suppose a 75K stud fee was about the range you were shopping in for her. Would you have booked to Awesome Again at that price before yesterday? Do you think he represented good value for the money?

Would you book to him tomorrow at 75K? Does he seem like a bargain now at that price, or are you still a little worried about the foal you're going to have to sell three years from now--which is a pretty long time after yesterday's great results.

What about 100K? That's a lot of money to sink into a horse that the buying market didn't think much of before yesterday, especially when weighed against the fact that you could, for example, get a 2nd year season to Mineshaft for the same money.

I think the breed-to-race crowd is going to be more impressed by yesterday's results than the breed-to-sell people. And those who breed to race don't need to pay 100K to find a good horse to breed to.

Just my opinion, of course. It will be interesting to see how this all plays out.
