How does one train a pony horse?

After being at the track for a bit, I wonder...how do you actually train a pony horse for their job at the track?

Very carefully  We started ours walking back and forth to the track with horses with riders on then moved up to ponying with riders on and then without riders. Most laid back horses have no issues with it.

It helps if you start with a well trained horse that doesn't mind other horses in their space. If they do mind they will usually not like other horses leaning on and bumping/touching them and will act out (kick). This kind of horse is not what you want. :?
