secrets to making a mare stick???

Postby tammysinnett » Sun May 14, 2006 1:55 pm

ok we are in this breeding thing for the second year, a client has brought us a challenge...she has been barren for two years she is 17...has had six foals in her life...all in May andJune to the same stallion...we have had her two heat cycles and we have tried iodine flushes, pasture breeding ,hand breeding etc. When she breeds she does loose allot right after the breeding....(not trying to be to graphic) some tell us to keep her still some say to walk her and I have even been told to try a cold bucket of water thrown on her right after to make her not "squat"...are there any other suggestions myclient and I know if we could just get one more foal it would be a good one....don't laugh....but we are trying every wise tale out there so send me your suggestions!!!

Ultrasound her on her heat to determine the size of the follicle. When you have a nice fat 4.5 or better, breed her and follow up with a shot of HCG to cause her to ovulate. Parade her past the stallion two days later... if she still shows heat, breed again. The HCG causes ovulation but the egg can take 12-36 hours to reach the uterus.

I never fail to use the scientific methods so I know what's happening inside. But last year I added a product from a comany that is making non-drug therapy products. I used their basic product and their mare fertility product on an 18 year old maiden mare and a 24 year old mare with inflammation issues (fluid in uterus) along with oxytocin. Both mares in foal! YAY! :D

You could enforce her. It is legal with the JC, easy to do, and may help. Also, oxytocin after breeding or flushing will help remove excess semen which may be causing the uterus to react, or the uterus may lack the tone required to rid the junk after breeding too. Has the vet u/s her at all? What is her uterine tone like? Is she actually cycling? Have you had a hand in her to check her cervix for tone and tightness post breeding (a cervix that does not close properly can cause a lack of conception). There are many things to check and try, but forst off I would have the vet check her over for cysts, tears, damage, tone, infection etc, and go from there.

try putting the mare on regumate 5 days after breeding her then you can always take her off of it later. Sounds like she has hormone issues ask the vet about the regumate , I've also seen them bring the mares in on regumate.

hormone issues

Postby tammysinnett » Tue May 16, 2006 11:07 pm

yes they have had the mare checked per vet, and flushes , sonograms etc all done. This mare I do believe has hormone issues--she comes in for two days goes out(very brutle with the stallion, doesn't let him near) then back in she comes and stays in about 5 -7 days. I think the owner has given up, and we are almost there....I will give him all your ideas and see if he wants the investment...she is a beautiful mare...big and thick.....wonderful personality.....she would have made good sportshorse babies....thankyou for everyones ideas.

If you really want the mare in foal you need to get a good repro vet involved. The first thing I would check (given the age of the mare) is to have her scoped for cysts in the Uterus. It is a problem that can be corrected but you will probably not get her in foal until they are removed. I would also check her uterus for infection or fluid, assuming there is no problem there, I would then Levage her for three straight days and perform a caslick with a breeding stitch. Hit her with the Oxytocin for 2 straight days and then moniter her until she has a 40-50 follicle, breed, rebreed 2 days later and then put her on regumate for about a week. Good luck
best regards Brendan
