"I have to tell you Tiz that the above is unwarranted and unjustified. You sound like a PETA activist."

You know something, Shammy? You have no idea what you're talking about. I have had a front row seat for this and have seen the revolving door up close. Do not preach on a subject that you don't know.

Shammy "Checked out the rest of your blog. Big surprise. Some very good information. Sadly, I pictured you as a young tobacco chewing bib overall dressed redneck from East St. Louis who actually lives in Kansas but uses KC as a drop box to avoid the IRS and ICE. Got a little age on yourself, too. I'm assuming that your profile is not fictional, of course. "

You know Shammy, These comments are not appropriate at all to anyone. I started this thread to have a normal conversation, not to jump and assume that you know people in a horrible way. I agree with Tiz, but this is down right RUDE of you, esp during this time of the year.
I have seen what you write on Louis Thread too. Why do you even come on to this site if you say such things about people.

I can live with myself.

Aren't you the one that suggested "a single bullet" to economize on euthanizing costs? I started in the horse business some 40 years ago and I understand the realities of what goes on, but your suggestion of "shooting" a horse to save a a few bucks, turns my stomach. Sounds to me like it is you who should watch what you are saying on a public forum.

Louis' thread is open to all. Louis and I joined the board about the same time. He knows what to expect from me. I'm asking Louis to prove his points. Jump in anytime. I invite Tiz too. Bring your facts, I, along with a few others, will enjoy the debate.

I can live with Shammy's statement(s) as well.

Look at the economics. I would sincerely doubt that Doug shipped (flew or vanned) a horse cross country just to have it break down. Regardless of people's assumptions, the reality is you need to finish and win the race for it to be an economically sound move.

He didn't ship to have any horse break down.

He probably did ship to get an easier track for horses whose owners understand that dropping may mean their horses will get claimed, but they also may have a chance of winning.

These owners usually want their horses to win, or get off the payroll by getting claimed.

As an owner, I can tell you that if you don't do that, you will soon be out of money and you will basically own a lot of 1200 pound pets.

You don't have to go all the way back east from CA to see that concept in action. Pick up a program from Turf Paradise in AZ and see how many Cal Breds are there racing. They aren't there for the good weather.

WOW Nice negative thoughts in racing..... where's the good..... doug got some cheap horses his owners can't come out on so shipps a barn east to softer spots big purses, makes the big drop so everyone is scared wins a couple make money gets claimed make money...... i am not sure he is going to ship all the way across country to break one down better for the owner to sell cheap and move on... if they are going to claim something from he going to run good ones first and have his barn look good and then sneak a bad one in on them, you can't make it obvious from the start that all you have is bad ones or your not going to get nothing claimed from you or run a bunch of junk early then run some better one cheaper later to steal....... what a game we play i sure wish i was in his shoe to play the game... i will be there some day.....

If anyone has noticed its mostly Doug down as the owner. Also hes in partnership with some other horses.

So it costs Doug 1K to van the horse to Philly or Penn and the horse gets claimed for 5K plus any purse money. So thats a profit right there.

Tuc if i get the horses name maybe you might know the horse that didnt finish and was claimed.

In an ironic twist of fate, he was claimed by Gill. The more humane fate for Luhuk's Dancer would be a quick and humane euthanasia.

You know, I love racing, but...
Drastic drops for geldings, and the perception or reality that there is an issue is the worst apple in the barrel of racing.

jr,
If I understand your post, are you saying that owners and trainers don't ship to easier tracks to win or get claimed? You must not be an owner.

These aren't horses we raised in the backyard, with Micky Rooney as the trainer.

At $50 to $150 per day per horse, they have to win or move on. It isn't negative, it is reality. That's why 85% of races at any track are claiming races.

Those races allow owners and trainers to put their horses where they can win - and, some tracks are easier than others. The big CA tracks are some of the toughest in the world, even for bottom claimers. You have to find easier spots for horses if they are not winning, or if they develop issues that will slow them down, but necessarily break them down.

That's all Doug, and most other owners and trainers, are trying to do. If they didn't, they would soon be out of business.
