Myth: Goldikova should be Horse of the Year

Postby George William Smith » Thu Nov 11, 2010 7:43 pm

I'm writing an article on the Breeders' Cup and putting it up on my website. I'm up to Myth #3 which is:
Myth #3: Goldikova should be selected for Horse of the Year.
................As much as I love her and she always has the highest GSV in her Breeders' Cup races, she is a pure miler and maybe a touch more. Clearly, she is distance-limited else she would have shot for the Turf Classic at least one of the last three years as the purse is $1 million more.

Champion older female and / or best turf female..are the 2 nearest if any ...she didn't race enough on US soil...the historic
streak of BC Mile (over 3 years) however mind-boggling...might not help her..surely she would get something big in Cartier
Awards but not the Esclipe.

A mon avis.

The race was awesome to watch though at this years BC. Yes, she may only be doing a mile, but the mare has won 3 BC Mile's in a row!! Quite impressive to me! I have a feeling she could go the mile and a quarter but her niche seems to be the Mile...big money winner at it too! I'd like to see her in the spot for horse of the year!

A MON AVIS :

Yes...there isn't a clear cut line...but unlike last year...btw the two ladies...you crown one you hurt the other, immediately...this year,
Blame was anyway not a strong title seeker going into the BC box..and he emerged a surprise winner..so the title might be secondary
to the connections...he would get say, champion older male at the least.

Here is what I read on the web about 2010 Cartier Awards nominations :
Horse of the Year: Canford Cliffs, Goldikova, Harbinger, Twice Over, Workforce.

Older Horse: Goldikova, Harbinger, Midday, Rip Van Winkle, Twice Over.

Three-year-old colt: Canford Cliffs, Cape Blanco, Dick Turpin, Makfi, Workforce.

Three-year-old filly: Lillie Langtry, Music Show, Sarafina, Snow Fairy, Special Duty.

Two-year-old colt: Casamento, Dream Ahead, Frankel, Pathfork, Wootton Bassett.

Two-year-old filly: Hooray, Laughing Lashes, Memory, Misty for Me, White Moonstone.

Cartier stayer: Americain, Celtic Celeb, Gentoo, Rite of Passage, Sans Frontieres.

Cartier sprinter: Equiano, Lady of the Desert, Markab, Sole Power, Starspangledbanner.

Workforce, winner of Derby and Arc double this year, stands the best chance. Not all doublers are HOY...Lammtarra and Sinndar
were not made HOY in 1995 and 1999 resp. Mill Reef was crowned european king in 1971.

Remember the Axiom...Follow the Money
If Goldikova was as good as claimed, she would have run in the Turf Classic for $1 million more and 4 fewer runners. The truth is she is the Best Miler and cannot get the last half mile to win the Turf Classic. She's great, but she has major distance limitations. Easy to vote Champion Miler, Sprinter, but not HOY

Why does Goldikova have to prove her worth at 12f? How bout those distance horses take her on at a mile? They can't beat her. No horse on the planet can touch her dominance at that distance. I don't get the distance snobbery. I really don't. I think horses should run at their best distance. Sprinters should sprint, middle distance should middle distance, stayers should stay. It's pretty simple actually.

Coincidently...the 2009 Ispahan was her only out of the money run in career..she ran a 4 1/2 L 3rd in 11f won by Zarkava,
albeit a lady only.

I dont get how a horse can win a race 3 years running on World Championship day and not get Horse of the Year but a horse who wins the Classic on World Championship Day one time can be the best . I mean, perhaps the judging should be made on how many Grade 1's or Group 1's a horse has won in 1 year and then after that base some of the whole thing on their biggest performance on World Championship Day.
Ive seen horses win the Classic and not get Horse of the Year and horses who didnt even compete on that day get the award.
I think it should be based on the yearly performance of a horse and then the deciciding factor be their placing on Breeders Cup Day.

she won at 9F this year. :-)

You don't think she would have beat Dangerous Midge in the TURF?

Surely she's better than him right?

She was very impressive in BC Mile but HOY has never been given to a European horse shipping in for one race. She is a tremendous mare no doubt.

I agree with zinn - Goldikova is a European based horse - let her get THEIR awards. HOY should be US-based, IMO. (Zenyatta!)

Maybe we should have her run on the dirt, too?

Do not expect any HOY to be an all rounder...no such horse exists...try ask Usain Bolt to run 1500..see what would happen...I guarantee
he will get good fractions in the 1st half..but limp like a soul-less duck in the next half.
