Breeders Cup Juv. Sprint --- the right distance?

Postby Jorge » Tue Jun 14, 2011 9:53 am

Do you agree that the newly created Breeders Cup Juvenile Sprint should be run at 6 furlongs (same distance as the Breeders Cup Sprint for older horses) rather than 5 furlongs or 5-1/2 furlongs?

Pros and Cons about 6 furlongs at this stage of their careers.

Thanks for your opinions.

The distance is okay; they should not have reduced the purse of the Sprint though.

Six furlongs is what it should be if they're going to have a sprint.

The other BC races for 2 year olds are run at a mile (turf) and a mile and a sixteenth (dirt).

I'd rather had the race at 5 furlongs, on the grass. but it's all decided, no point to argue.

And now we can have a whole new group of speedballs who win one race at 2 and retire to stud for the next breeding season because they're broken down.

Wouldn't it have been interesting if the BC Sprint (as we've known it for years and years) was opened up to accept 2-year-olds? Bottom line...if a 2yo beat all comers of all ages in a 2-yos and up BC Sprint...an eclipse for champion 2yo would (arguably anyway) be very possible for the winner.

That said...if a BC Juvenile Sprint at 5 1/2 or 6 furlongs was offered, likely the winner of that race would have difficulty garnering enough votes to be awarded 2-yo eclipse honors. Why? Seems (to me anyway) that a BC Juvenile winner would, more likely than not, trump (from a voters perspective anyway) a BC Juvenile Sprint winner whether the juvenile sprint was run at 5 1/2 or 6 furlongs.

Who knows...maybe a new eclipse category will be announced...2-year-old sprinter  . Oh well.

Best to ya.

Thoughts?

this is just horrible. why take funds out of the breeders cup sprint to fund this crap.

I don't think it should be shorter. I think a 5F race between the fastest 2YO's in the world at that time of year does more harm than good.
