I remember when Military Plume, 3rd in the '62 Travers, was standing in Massachusetts. In those days I thought his was the epitome of a good pedigree.

Military Plume WAS a superbly-bred horse, and I remember thinking the same thing! *Princequillo was still at the top of his game, and Bold Ruler hadn't quite found the spotlight yet.
A horse which raced in the same timeframe, and who I thought had a great pedigree was GUADALCANAL:

Why can I remember who finished 2nd in the 1961 Travers but can't recall who won Sunday's feature race at Saratoga?

Randy Moss: "you know i really could use a bacon cheeseburger right now
Bailey: "that's great randy, you know i once ate a bacon cheeseburger 10 minutes before i won the Kentucky derby on sea hero, that was the best 3YO i have ever ridden. I also ate a bacon cheeseburger when i won the travers on M D'oro, e was the best 3YO i ever ridden. The one time I didn't eat a bacon cheeseburger was when I won the BC Classic on Saint Liam. Even though he didn't win the BC until he was 5, he was also the best 3YO i have ever ridden"

I think Orb looked short, maybe needed a race, but I thought he ran great.
As for Verrazano, big hype horse...Pletcher's best 3-year-old is Palace Malice, he shows up every time.
ithink v i shis best horse in his barn by a country mile. I think pletcher's problem is he keeps trying to make his best horse a classic horse, and he's not a classic horse. he's a miler. probably even a turf miler. would love him on turf with that pedigree. but he's not a classic horse and i don't care how many lengths he beats crappy horses by i will never wager on him in a real 10F grade 1 race until he proves me wrong. but he's very talented IMHO
Orb just needed something more to run at the pace was SLOW. and he ran his eyeballs out. orb is not what i would call push button he needs something to run at.
you have to look at races subjectively. there was no reason for orb to be getting dogged the way he's been gettng in the press. he just needed some rest.

Here's the replay of the Travers. Which I thought, was one of the best renewals in years. Although it left lots of questions unanswered regarding the 3YO championship.....err, except one, Verrazano is out of it:>) The two most logical to make amends off this loss are Palace Malice (beaten 3/4's and a couple noses) and Orb (beaten 3/4's) who ran a fantastic race and should move forward off this much needed start. Palace Malice is better than his finish position would indicate...a speedy sort, was taken back to last after stumbling at the start. Wouldn't be surprised to see this group back again in the 3 and up Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont Park in 5 weeks as the search for the 3YO champion continues. The winner, Will Take Charge, recieved a 107 beyer for his performance. TJ
